Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Predator crown gear strips?

Question for you guys who've flown Predators for a while. How tough is the crown gear on them? I ask because I've now got 2 Preds (1 gasser, 1 alu 90), and I have the JR770 gyro in them. I went out and beat on the gasser a bit earlier this week, and did some fast piros with fast stops. The 770 stops NOW when you let go of the stick. Assuming the mesh is set correctly, is the crown gear going to hold up to the fast stops? I had an X-Cell years ago strip the crown gear after a fast piro stop, and ever since them I'm kinda leery of the design.

It doesn't sound like that's a sudden stop issue. It sounds like you had a mesh/alignment type of issue from how you ended the last post.

If you check about crown gear stripping in ANY forum on ANY 90 or bigger heli, you will find the crown gears can be stripped with hard stops.

That is precisely why most all gyros have a delay or similar adjustment on them.

This function adjusts the harshness of the stop. They can all be adjusted so that the stop is faster then the eye can perceive and right where you want it to stop without stripping gears. If this is adjusted properly

Predator

I'd have to agree with Phil. I've flown my Predators a lot and they are the only 90 size helis that I haven't had some tail drive problem with. I don't do hard stops, but I do a lot of flying backwards and sideways, and do a fair number of four point pirouettes which involve starting and stopping the tail. I've got the gyro gain set as high as I can make it: ~50% with the GY611/BLS251 combo. I've stripped out the tail gears several times on my Raptor 90 and Fury, and have slipped the tail drive belt on the Freya and Vigor. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with Jack's setup, but the Predator has had the most reliable tail drive of any 90 size heli I have owned. I generally set my gear mesh front and back fairly tight, so there is a little binding when it's first assembled. A split collar instead of the screw on collar at the bottom of the main shaft makes this job easy. steve.

i have only stripped one myself, and that was from a mild tail strike on a crappy auto. the blades didn't even break, but the crown gear lost a couple teeth.

i use a 601 in 3D mode. i do all kinds of backwards flying and i load up the tail a lot. i have even gone full right to full left piro's in a hover just for the sake of seeing if i could strip the crown gear, but i still use that same gear to this day.

i think the biggest advantage is that the folks at Century were thinking when they designed the tail tranny. the shafts are bearing supported on both ends to reduce the deflection effects from high loads, and keep the gear mesh as good as possible no matter what.
