So, I've been flying planks for almost 4 years and helis for a total of about 6 months. I figured it was a nice night to put a few flights on my Trex 450. I started out by getting my thumbs loosened up and then brought it in low for some face to face nose in hovering practice. That was fine. I did some more circuits around the field and then brought it in for some more nose in work. Feeling pretty confident, I tried to land it in that attitude. Well, it starting backing away from me, and before I knew it, the vertical tail fin caught the ground and stood the heli straight up on it's a$$! It then fell over and I had a mess to clean up. It wasn't bad though. New blades, boom, tail linkage, tail control, and flybar. Only about $35. I have never wrecked anything, but, I just got too confidant and that is the result. Oh, well, it could have been MUCH worse. It could have been my Raven in the dirt!

Roger that. Is it a stress fracture thing or can I see a problem by looking at them?

It may have a small tiny bend. Won't be noticeable till you spool up and watch the heli shake itself apart or worse fly weird and be impossible to track.

If in doubt to if it is bent, just roll it on a glass table. If you hear a loud audible clicking it's probably bent. If your not sure compare it to a new shaft, and the do the same. New shafts will click quietly from the Jesus bolt holes. Bent ones tend to be much noisier with the clicking.

Did you check the bearings too?

No I haven't ripped it apart to look it over yet. I just stopped by the lhs and got the stuff that was obviously bent. I will strip it down this weekend when I have the time to mess with it. I am a big believer in replacing ANYTHING that is questionable. $30 spent now is deffinately worth the $300 you'll have to spend later if you don't replace the part! I was just trying to find out if there are any parts that would slip through a thorough visiual inspection. Sucks, though, I am headed for Alaska early next week and I wanted to take the Trex with me. I guess she'll sit on the bench until all the parts come in and get replaced.

Well, I put it back together loosely and ran it up. Indeed the main shaft is bent. So, I will grab one of those tomorrow along with a new spindle.
