Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > Put the maiden on today, outcome not good *update*

Got to the field and wrung out the Trex 600N to get the ol' thumbs warmed up and then to fire up the N9 for the first time.

Got the blades in track, didn't need any trim, sounded great and no vibrations that I could see. Just going to hover for the first tank to get the engine ran in. Went into idle-up and goosed it a couple of times to see what kind of power she had... Well, things got ugly at this point. The tail started spinning uncontrollably and she went in I didn't see it but another guy saw the tail rotor come off completely! I guess I didn't have the set screw in the hub tightened correctly onto the tail output shaft.

I'm pretty bummed but it could have been worse. Didn't do a ton of damage, with blades I figure I will be between 200-300 but I already have a tail boom, flybar, main mast and spidle on hand.

If the wings are travelling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter

Man really sorry to hear that. I've been watching your posts with regard to getting your N9 ready to go and I'm sure you were looking forward to the first flight.

It will fly again! Let us know when you get it going again.

Jeff

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

Thanks guys, after looking at it closer I have a bent tail boom(dont know about the spindle and main mast yet) and mostly just a couple of chewed up gears. The tail hit first and packed dirt in the tail case and chewed those gears and the crown gear since it couldn't turn with the dirt packed in. Hyperdrive survived though! There are a few odds and ends plus landing gear and blades also. Not terrible so she will fly again soon, I need to find some landing gear in stock, Ron's didn't have any.

Sorry for the incident man. You will get it back soon. We all have faith in the Synergy.

I also crashed my Synergy first flight and the reason was that I forgot to velcro down the Rx battery and the battery just flew away in flight. I didn't use the canopy.

Thanks for the suggestions on where to get landing gear, I will be able to get her going again soon now.

Long, sounds like we are in the same bonehead boat then It sucks to crash due to a stupid mistake like that. Oh well though, crap like that happens I guess and life goes on!

Sorry to see this happen to anyone on their first flight. Do take your time and check everything over very well. I crashed back to back a few years a go when I missed a loose ball in the tail pitch control.

You didn't mention bearings but if you took out the main blades and tail gears they should be checked.

Well move over and hand me an oar
I put mine in on the first flight of the season too(thumbs).Like Chuckie said,go over the whole tail again and double check everything. One thing I like about the N9 is that once it's put together correctly,it stays together

Did you find the parts that were ejected?Would be interesting for diagnosis sake.

....say goodnight to the bad guy...

Ouch! Always stinks to crash, but on the first flight after all the work it's a little more depressing.

I like Todd's idea of using a 2x4 thru the skids with sandbags on the ends to hold the heli down for the first tank. Lets the gears set in, and helps identify the little problems that can get big in the air.

Yeah I did check the bearings. I need a couple... There are a few other odds and ends I need too. I just finished actually tearing it apart and now I have my list to order.

We did find the ejected parts. The cause was from me forgetting to loctite the set screw on the tail hub. I finished the build months ago so it is hard to remember why I didn't do it off the bat. I didn't think to check that part either on preflight because I usually loctite everything. Lesson learned anyway. I will make a more thorough preflight next time for sure.

Got a flight on the N9 today after the rebuild. Everything seems to be alright. I basically flew some low and slow circuits since the engine is new and I was a little gun shy.

I made sure to check all bearings, gears, screws, etc. It payed off as the second maiden flight went well today

Can't wait to start wringing this thing out!
