Guys

Just wanted to post this link to a friends Lama. This machine is an absolute tribute to his building skills and we will be sad to see it leave. Here is hoping a fellow kiwi will buy this machine and keep it in NZ.

Best of luck with your sale Colin

Hi John thanks for the post, Ive decided not to sell, the Lama won 1st place at the New Plymouth "Fun Fly" and its flying great.
Every time I go to fly its always blowing and that three blade head does not like wind unlike the Benzin Trainer that flies in anything.
However in about fifteen knots and a hard turn the tail rotor delaminated Vario have asked me to send them back. I wonder if any other's have experienced this problem.
Regards
Colin

Hi Gonzalo
Great to here from you.
The rotor blades split into two half's through its length on both blades on the benzin trainer. We were about three metre's high and checking the rev's on the main rotor head with the rev metre.
There was a loud crack and the trainer went into a spin with no tail control. No insect hits, no boom strikes, just a gust of high wind for a split second turning the tail just before the crack.
Even with the blades split they will not touch the vertical stab.
I have sent the blades back to Vario Australia for inspection.
Regards
Colin

Delaminated tail rotor blades

Colin,Sorry to hear about your problem, interesting that both the blades split
I have a some questions,
Have the blades been modified,in any way?
Been painted?
Rubbing down for painting?
Washed down with, say thinners, before painting
Had vinyl strips stuck on, to get stripped effect?
Had the ends squared off, for scale appearance?
Been left in the car with hatch down,?
Sun on the blades, when it is too windy to fly
Kept in a heated shed?

Reason for the questions, these are some of the things I do, and have seen done, to get the scale look, of the full size

Hi Peter
No is the answer to all questions but one. I have a large van to transport the Lama and a couple of other Heli's around, it is possible they have been in a warm situation.
I always cover my helicopter's with an old parachute silk to hide from site and to keep away from sunlight. The van never gets to hot as I always keep the windows down a little to allow air movement, and park in the shade. It sure wakes you up when the tail starts self destructing, However I have owned several Vario models and this is the first time anything like this has happened. Hopfully Vario can sort it out. One point, I noticed when removing the split tail rotor's they were a little tighter than I usually have.
regards
Colin
