RJX Hobby Hurrican 50 - Xtreme 50 > Woo Hooooo - She finally Maidened this weekend!

RockohaulicElite Veteran - Location: Valencia, CA, USA, 3rd Rock from the Sun -
Woo Hooooooo - My RXs finally came back from Horizon on Friday, I finished the build on Saturday, and maidened on Sunday! What a great weekend!

I have to say, and I say this with all sincerity - it was the best maiden flight ever! Period. She spun up smoothly, came up into a solid hover, and tracking was perfect. I had to dial in more gain on my new gyro, and then the tail was locked in solid. Sweeeeet!

I really like this head design. I think the Bell/Hiller mixing on the blade grips really helps to set up this thing on the bench so she's dialed in perfect. The only things I had to adjust for the second flight was the main needle on the engine, and the gain on the gyro. Everything was set up beautifully.

Since I wasn't breaking in a new engine I could start having fun with her right away. On the second flight I wanted to see just how much pop this bird has. I went idle up 2 on the deck, 2000 headspeed, and went full collective. This thing shot into the sky like a scalded cat on crack! I couldn't believe it! My Trex 600 Nitro has nothing like this Xtreme. She had so much pop I even went back to the bench to check my pitch. It was 13 degrees. I have 12.5 on the Trex, so I'm sure it wasn't just the pitch. Sweeeeeeet! This kind of climb rate puts a smile on anyone's face!

I got 3 fun fun flights on her on Sunday. The only issue I had was rolls. My first roll was not axial - more like a barrel roll. I went back and did many more rolls, focusing on my cyclic so I only put in aileron, and focusing on my collective, and I could not get a nice axial roll. So I thought about it a bit, and wanted to ask you guys - Do you think this is the phase ring off slightly, or something else???

I set up the phase ring like the manual says, but this is supposed to be just a good starting point. If you look at the link from the flybar cage to the mixing arms in the picture of the head, you'll notice that the link is not straight up and down. The guys at the local hobby shop noticed this when I was talking about the rolls, and they recommended turning the phase ring counterclockwise slightly and trying that.

Has anyone seen this issue with the rolls???

Multiple flips were cake with this heli/gyro combo. And one of my ugliest maneuvers on the Trex is rolling inverted, and pushing her into a big rainbow. She turns on me with the nose comming at me with the Trex, and it just looks ugly. On the Xtreme I nailed a perfect rainbow everytime. It was beautiful man!!!

This is the final setup:

YS 50 ST Engine
RJX Pipe
RJX Metal Fan
RotorTech 610 Main Blades
90mm V-Paddles
CY Tail Blades
Scott Grey Reactor-X Regulator
Futaba BLS 451 Cyclic Servos
Multi Gov governor
Futaba 9252 Throttle Servo
Spartan 760 Gyro
Futaba BLS 251 Tail Servo

It came in at 7 lbs, 13 oz.

You should check out this heli. It would be a great addition to your fleet!

Rob is a good friend of mine, a great guy, and an awesome pilot! I used to fly with him when he lived in California. We need to make sure he has a chance to see this heli put through its paces!

Oh I forgot to mention the noise - or lack thereof. This is the first helicopter that sits there powered up without making any noise. It is utterly silent!

No chattering, no buzzing, no noise whatsoever! How cool is that!

I'm thinking it is a combination of the heli/setup, and the Reactor-X powering the brushless servos. Even the gyro servo is deadly silent.

It's so quiet it was one of the things I loved to show off!

And another thing.....

I really like the clear header tank. It saved me this weekend.

Yes, a header tank saved me from a potential crash because it is clear and easy to see through!

Halfway through flight #3 I noticed that the engine slightly hiccuped during a maneuver, I brought her in and landed and I could very easily see that the clunk inside the header tank had come off of the Hayes clunk line!

I shut down and called it a day - The clunk had also come off in the main tank where I use Hayes line also.

If it wasn't so easy to see the clunk rattling around in there, I would have been tempted to finish the tank which of course could have led to a total flame out and who knows what!

I really like the clear header tank!!!

I got it from Readyheli.

I was on their email waiting list, I got the email that it was in, and I immediately bought it before they were out of stock again...

Good to hear that you finally maidened her. I felt the same about my Xtreme 50 when I first took her up.

Has anyone seen this issue with the rolls???

I too have noticed that she has a tendency to "barrel roll" while trying to do some axial rolls. I am going to play with the phasing ring some. I usually align the washout arms with the main blade grip arms. I followed the recommendations in the manual, so I will see how she rolls once I adjust the phasing ring.

where did you get the gyro.

Try sending Autoeject a PM here on RR. He is the US Distributor for Spartan RC. I had mine on back order through him and as soon as he received them in, he sent mine out at the same time he sent the dealers theirs.

Rock

A little trick that a very good friend of mine showed me when using the Hayes line in the main and header tanks is to take a piece of regular fuel tubing, I am now using dubro yellow with great results,

cut a few small pieces about 3/16" and slide them over the hayes, then push the hayes onto the fitting and clunk and then use the extra tubing to slide it over the clunk and inlet fitting as a clamp so to speak, it hasn't failed me yet, even when the Hayes swells after being in the fuel this method holds it in place.

I know it's been mentioned in RC Heli mag as well

Clyde,

This is exactly what I am going to do! I have had this happen before, so I should have done this trick in the first place.

Hayes line is great for clunk lines, but the swelling can be a pain in the butt!

At least I cut the lengths correctly this time. I've had the clunk jammed up against the back-side of the header before because I underestimated the amount of swelling.

Tell that to his Xtreme 50 after I had to pull 3/4 of the tail boom out of the mud last month (while still attached to the heli).
