e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > Eco 8 Mechanical vs CCPM mixing

Hey Guys,

Anyone out there still flying with the mechanical mixing plate?

Any cons to doing so other than no 3D flight and possible binding issues?

Having transmitter problems for my 120 degree setup, am tempted to toss the plate in but just looking for some thoughts on the pros / cons..

I tried the mechanical mixing. The plate fits too loose in the frame and the slop makes the heli barely flyable. I tried graphite lube and finally just bought a heli radio.
One of my Eco's is flown with 90degree ccpm. It is very precise and it is my 3D bird. The servo's can be mounted directly to the frame and are protected in the event of a crash. I have a Jet Ranger with 120 degree ccpm and I get subtle pitch changes with control inputs.
My advice is, if you are having trouble, go to 90 degree ccpm, it is far better than the pitch plate..

Ok, I definatly can understand the possible slop, I upgraded the rotar head and other misc linkage due to that and if the plates going to cause more, its not worth my time trying the plate.

The problem im having is with the transmitter, my current transmitter doesnt have a display and setting the throttle / pitch curves is next to impossible. Thats the only reason I wanted to try the plate and avoid a new transmitter.

Any suggestions on transmitters, I am looking at the Spektrum DX7 or JR line at one point.

I have been Futaba only for 20 years so I am too biased to give you any help on radio selection. I would think that any name brand radio will work. Is your current radio a heli radio? It could be made to work if it is. You are correct in assuming that a newer computer radio will greatly simplify the set-up process.

I like your setup, thats pretty tight..

I need to upgrade the frame as its currently stock and wobbels.

I do have a 7ch heli radio that has ccpm mixing on it, however the trottle and pitch curves are done by twisting a knob for each. Next to impossible to get them setup that way as it would be trial and error and with as much $$ as I have it this, im not about to play games with a knob radio and crash it on its first flight. Atleast with the digital I can program all that stuff in and tweak it out.

I had orgionally had one of these 5yrs ago, brushed, but tricked out and sold it when I went to college. Been flying the 30 sized helis for the past couple years and now wanted more again so started to build this 4months ago. Thats why I was asking if anyone was still using the mechanical.. That would be an easy fix for me to get it up.. But if I have to worry about the loose fit, possible binding and the frame wobble, just going to do it right.

Do you have a harsh jerk on startup with yours? I have the esc set to soft start, but man there is a jerk at the first sign of power, even using the trim as inital step up. It has been wacking so hard that I stripped the pin housing for the main shaft gear and wacked my boom. Just wondering if this was common with the brushless larger units. Thats about the only other thing that is stumping me.

You have any futaba recomondations? Dont care about brand really, just would like someone to give me a heads up of there settings to go off of.

I fly mine with a Futaba 7C PCM. I use a 146IP rx and GY401 gyro. As you see I made a stacked frame design to enclose the lipo inside the frame. With the support of the outer CF frames the main shaft has no flex. I used 30 size JR landing gear. I took as much of that nasty red anodizing off as I could.
I use -9,0,+9 pitch in all modes. 0 to 100% throttle in normal and 100,50,100 in idle up.
I was doing some fast flips to inverted today and got to throwing it around a little hard and bent the hardened mainshaft in flight. I got it down under power ok but it was really shaking. I wish I had it on video. My next project will be a better mainshaft for the ECO.
The best upgrade for the frame flex is the frame stiffener between the frame sides behind the motor. You can do this one with just a piece of 1/4 inch hobby pine. Here is an old pic of mine with the wood stiffener behind the motor. I had to get the aluminum one to use the Century 550 motor because of it's size.

My ESC is a Century Electron. It has a great soft start. You can give it half stick at the start and it will very slowly spool up to speed. No whacking the main gear. Best I ever used. Link to it.http://www.heli-world.com/detail.aspx?ID=9021

BeltFedBrowning -
Thanks for sharing that info on the ESC, appears to be a good bang for the buck?? I noticed you had a Phasor motor have you changed that out as well. Just wondering because I got one in trade and wondering if it's worth holding onto for back up...... or a second ECO.

The phasor is a pretty good motor. I had to run it on 4S lipo to get enough power out of it for 3D and it got pretty hot. It is great for FFF though and seems like a pretty well built motor. The Jeti ESC that I had running it didn't have a soft start so I had to pre spin the rotor before I started the motor. I used an 18 tooth pinion and got about 1700 headspeed.

Incidentally, I also fly my fully blinged Eco 8 with 90deg CCPM, although I don't go wild with it. I just like all that sweet metal - and the fact that it's in the Jet Ranger body. As for the stiffener, I use the lower plastic frame (discarded because replaced with metal) which I cut to length but the width is perfect.
