e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > Trex 500 or 600E?

The 500 kit is very expensive plus you have to spend another $100 for the tail drive so you don’t crash from ESD. Once you fly a Trex 600 you won’t be happy with anything smaller.

Where can you buy a 500 kit with no electronics?

Why GrandRC, of course....

Trex 600e is what you really want.

the 600 and 500 fly very close to the same. my buddy has both and i think they fly almost the same. both are very stable and smooth

I tend to agree with that statement.

I can't really recommend one of the other - they are both good helis. I have a T-Rex 450, 500, and a 600e. Right now, with all of the people worrying about static on the 500, so you may want to read up on that issue first. Personally, I haven't had any problem with it.

From a learning perspective, I started out on a Raptor 30, before there was a V2. When the 50 coversion kit came out, I put that on and liked the stability of the larger rotor disk plus the extra power of the .50 - essentially what the 600e is. Keep in mind, this was before 3D went mainstream.

I am starting to favor the size of the 500 over my 600. I think the 600 is a smoother and more stable heli, but batteries are more expensive. For me, there is better parts availability locally for the 600. If you buy everything online then that shouldn't be an issue, except for maybe blades. It may be better now, especially since the vblades are out, but a few weeks ago, the 500-sized blades were scarce. I'm also waiting for the torque tube for the 500 - I have it on my 600 and like the feel of it better than the belt.

I don't think the 500 and 600 fly the same - you can set them up to behave the same, but the 500's power to weight ratio is higher and the cyclic response is much faster. It also feels a lot lighter in the air. Because of this, it might be the better stock 3D learning platform. If money is no object, then a high voltage 600 setup will give you great performance and runtime on big lipo packs. The 500 is maxed out on 5s/6s 4000 mah packs, and fitting a big pack requires some cutting of the frames and/or modding the canopy (usually the bottom clip) to fit.

In my case, I'm running A123s on both the 500 and 600. Runtime is kinda short, but adequate: 4:30 on the 500 (6s A123, stock 500L, 16T) and 5:30 on the 600 (15s A123, Neu 1912/1.5y, 15T).

whew...

everytime I hear "900 bucks for 3 packs", I get off my electric kick and go back to looking at nitro's, which is where I came from anyways. Plus the charger costs??? We have 30% fuel here for $19 a gallon, so that's like 60 gallons of fuel for the cost of 3 packs and a good charger - and that's if you don't stick 'em in the dirt.
In some ways (especially electrics), this hobby has gotten really expensive in the last 10 years since I got out.
That being said, I'll probably be buying a 450 (most likely a MiniT)
just to throw in the truck for impromptu flying at work.

Agreed that the initial cost is high. I'm brand new to all of this and choked for a while on the cost of packs, chargers, etc. I ended up going with a 500 becasue of the size, stability, and level of support available for a newb. Personally, I wouldn't want anything smaller.

I believe the cost of a well equipped 500 with lipos, good charger and power supply (important when you are charging a $100 plus pack) is probably similar to that of a 600N setup. For me what you mentioned about convenience is what tipped the scale. I carefully considered a nitro, and I will probably get one at some point, maybe a 700 . But, the combination of size and convenience won me over. As for the 600 electric, I just couldn't do it and I had an opportunity to buy one for a very good deal. Three packs for that beast equals my whole setup less radio and charger.

You will do much better price wise if you buy a combo. Check GrandRc (www.grandrc.com). By packaging everything but the TX and RX I probably saved more than $200.

Good luck,

Dave

The cost of nitro will eventually catch up to the cost of the batteries.....me thinks.

I have both 500 and 600. 500 is my favorite at the moment. It's a lot more nimble in the air.

But for stability you can't beat 600.

I have a trex 450, 500, 600e and 600n. Out of all of them I think my 500 and 600n gets the most flight time. I really like the 500 and how it does the 3D and the amount of power it has. my 450 has a quicker responce on the cyclic and because of it's size it can and does crazy 3D stunts. The 500 has by far the best collective responce out of all my heli's. Really depends on my mood on which heli I fly that day. I normaly bring my 450 - 500 and 600 to the field and try to fly all of them at least a few flights.

The 500 will be fine if you dont have a 450 size heli, if you already have a 450 size heli then go for the 600. People are saying 4 or 5 mins of hard 3D...remember we don't all fly 3D & I get 8 mins from a 5000mAH pack, thats general flying..NO 3D. May I add that the battery at this stage is about 60% discharge & they do say no more than 80%...might be able to squeeze 10 mins of sport flying from the pack. Packs for the 600E are $130...cant go wrong at that price.

Where do I fly? In a very confined scrap bit of ground between 2 car parks, trees all around & so it's lift off, get up high & fly

Ross

Seems to me that ALL heli's beat the air into submission
