hey guys, I'm a newbie trying to step up to a bigger heli, now i'm running on a 30 size glow heli. I want to go electric and my first choice is the Trex but not sure, wich one should i start for? Trex 500 or Trex 600E? i'm not doing anything fancy by now, jut forwoord flight, hover, some loops, etc... but my goal is 3D.
I'll appretiate all your comments, thanks in advance.

Hi Guilartec,

It depends on your field and your budget. If you have a large enough field to fly at, and you can afford an extra $500, I'd go with the 600E. Bigger helicopters are more stable and less effected by the wind. I'm flying an 8S 600E and it has even more power than my 600N and flies as sweet.

But if your budget or field size is smaller, the 500 is an excellent machine. My buddy has a 500 and it appears to be an excellent machine for 3D. It has great pop and is incredibly stable for a machine of that size. So it's good, but not as good as a 600.

Hope that helps.

Keep 'em flying.

The T600 is a real nice very easy to fly 3D helicopter and is slightly larger than your 30 size nitro bird. The T500 is nice but it’s a real small helicopter – not much bigger than the T450.

It really comes down to what size of a helicopter you want to fly.

I agree with what LJS said. Here is a comparison of a 450,500 and a 50 size nitro. May help you get an idea of the size of these heli's.

The 600e flies a lot larger than the 500 but the 500 is much more stable than the 450. It flies similarly to the 600. Battery prices and crash costs will be more with the 600. Despite its size, the 500 will fly a lot like your 30 except with a lot more punch. I think that if you want something that you can still take anywhere and have the financial resources to buy a lot more batteries (ie flight time), then I'd get the 500. I have both as well as a 450 and the 500 is my favorite heli.

I can't fault the 600E, prices are good if you shop from the far east, even batteries are 1/2 price. I'ts tried & tested & above all suits a newbie like me just fine.

How about the fly time with the stock battery

Flight times on a TRex 600E with a 5000MAH 6s battery is going to be about the same as a TRex 500 with a 2500 6s battery. If you're not doing 3D, you can get 5-7 minutes of flying time or even more, depending on your head speed. I'm getting about 4 minutes of flying with both my 500 and 600E with the above batteries doing hard 3D.

Thanks for your information! So it is about 60-70% of the TREX450 then.

500, hands down, flies WAY better out of the box than the 600.

600 motor is aweful and a 6s setup is really under powering a 600 size machine.

I had to spend a lot and do a lot of mods to get my 600 to fly good hard 3d!

500 will do it out of the box...No question!

Rable, that's very useful information for us to choose between 500 and 600.

And you hit the point I've been hesitating.

HMMM, 500 may be the better choice for now...

I love my 600E, true you have to move to a 8S-10S set up for the extreme 3D pilots, I run 6S with a stock motor and 550mm blades, it has plenty of power for my flying skills, very stable flight, a nice stepping stone in my training. I also have the 600N, which will handle more 3D flight, the best of both worlds.

Just want to run through some cost numbers.

I bought a 600GF from Grand RC WITHOUT the motor and speedo... $299. Can't beat the price. I put a 8S setup in it from the get-go (1910H/1Y). It costs about $1000 to get in the air WITH 8S with top quality stuff. That's about the same as a good 500 setup. From there, the only cost difference is the batteries. For the most part, the spare parts even cost the same. Most good batteries have crash warranties, so that helps defray the difference in crash costs, though I don't think a newbie should be getting a 600E. Just too dangerous. A nitro can't accidentally spring to life on a newb.

While I could use my 450SE packs on a 500, I would still want to fly my 450 every time I go out (I take the 600 and the 450 every time). I would want 3 flights on the 500, so I would be looking at about $420 in additional batteries. The 8S FP batteries for the 600 cost me $867 for 3. So... my final price difference... $447.

Forgot... blades do cost more to replace on the 600.

All this being said, if I do try a 500 and fall in love, I might sell the 450, but I really do like the 450 for travelling... just TOO easy.

Cheers!

I'm new to this stuff all together and pondered the same comparison. The deciding factor for me was the cost of lipos and charging for the 600. To buy three good packs and be able to charge two at once you're looking at serious $$ for the 600. I bought my 500 with all gear, including three Align 2500/6s packs, from Grand RC for around $1000. This included upgraded servos and gyro (9650s/3400 on tail/770G). I spent another $350 on a Hyperion Duo and Hong Kong power supply. Unless I'm mistaken you're going to spend that amount or more for just the lipos and charging setup for a 600 if you go with a comparable setup. This was a tough choice for me because I had someone local who wanted $650 for a well equipped $600 with two lipo (a bit undersized though). The other factors are is ability to fly on the fly and parts costs. The size of the 500 seems ideal to me and crash costs are important. If you decide to go with a 600 keep your eyes on the classified forums...many for sale (which says something to me).

Good Luck,

Dave

I would get a 500 over a 600E unless you plan on stepping up to a 8s or 10s set up. I have a 500 and love the way it flies. The only bad side of the 500 is it gets small fast if you like flying far away. You can't beat the battery cost for the 500's with a stick or the blade prices. new blades for a 500 are about half the cost of 600 blades. The 500 is also 3d ready out of the box, all tho I'm thinking about trying a Medusa motor in my 500. You can also go 5s on the 500 with a different pinion to get better flight times which is always nice when you're starting out.

Not if your flying any well known name brand. Our consumer economy and short demand of quality CF 425/430mm blades has the price for blades uncomfortably high. Hold an Align 600D and an Align 425CF in your hands and you'll be amazed to realize there is only a $10 difference between them.

I made the jump from 450 straight to 600E. Having never flown anything else, the leap was intimidating. I spent way too much time getting comfortable (un-scared) of the 600 that I almost stopped having fun. For that reason alone I would move up incrementally to the 500. Lol, since we all know your gonna get the 600E later anyway, get the basic stuff for your T500 with the 600 in mind. Tools, storage, chargers, power supply, etc. That way you'll be able to move up again when your ready without having to buy a lot of new repetitious stuff.

Oh, for the type of flying you mentioned, either the 500 or 600 will well meet your expectations. Both fly very stable compared to the 450. Now it just boils down to cost. $$$$

The 600E is far more stable than the 500, and since you have the 6S 2500mAh batteries, just parallel them on the 600 for a 6S2P 5000mAh, everyone always seems to push the extreme setups for the helis, for a new pilot the stock setup should suffice for a season, give you enough feel do descide weather you want to go extreme, or switch to nitro, dont forget if you lay out alot of cash for the top of the line electronics and find out its more than you can handle, good luck getting your investment back. I fell into that trap with my T-Rex 450, there are tons of sweet upgrades and hitec electronics and I went for the top of the line heli, $2000 later I had a nice heli that I couldn't sell for half the price, and the money would have been better spent on a 600 or 50 class. I have the good fortune of flying with Alex Rodrigueze, he has a stock T-rex 500CF, CNC rotor head, plastic tail, stock motor and ESC, with a TP 6S 2500mAh, and flies the s@#t out of it, and it didn't cost him a fortune. I love my HDX 500 and I am far more compfortable flying it than the 600 but its catching up fast, and now today since I have my 600N in the air, the learning curve is accelerating quickly.

That’s definitely the best deal around. You get a real nice large 3D helicopter at a very good price.

Yup... I'm tickled about it. Can't touch a 500 for that price... a 500 kit only (not motor) is $389.

There's just something to the presence of the 600, and the other thing that I forgot to mention... I LOVE autos. The 600 is incredible at them.
