e-HeliDirect HDX 300 - 450 - 500 - 600 > 3S set-up

Hi guys,
I have an HDX 500 SAH. I would like to run a 3s set-up if possible. A friend of mine has a Lepton that runs a Hyperion z 3025-8 with a 3s2p 4200 mAh TP lipo. His heli seems to have plenty of juice for sport flying, and still gets 8-9 minutes of flight time. I think I would like to go with a similar set-up as I am not to the 3D stage yet. I have several 3s packs for my 450, so this would cut down on the battery expense considerably.

Here is what my set-up looks like minus Motor.

Cyclic: 3x HS-85MG
Gyro: RC-TEK G730
Rudder: Futaba S9257
ESC: Turnigy Plush 60A with integrated switchmode BEC
Battery: 2x 3s TP 2070 in parallel for 3s 4140mAh.

SO what would be a good low cost motor for this 3s set-up?

Thanks,
Dave

I am running my hdx 500 on 3s using the stock 850kv motor w/ 26t pinion. I have plenty of power for sport flying and get around 9 minutes of flying and could probally spare another 30 seconds...

smcbmw,
That is great to hear! Do you know how many amps your set-up pulls? Also, I noticed HeliDirect sells two 850 KV motors which one are you using?

new e flyer would apreciate any advice on throttle curves.

im new to this e stuff, I just bought a hdx with the new 3d head.. upgrade motor...e.t.c
being what I just said about knowing nothing about e stuff if you join two 3s together dont that make it 6s?
Anyhow I should say ive been flying 600 size nitros for a few years and im so far very impresed with this little toy, only had about 5 flights now, but allthough not quite in the same league as the 600 size, I think ill manage to toss this thing about somewhat, and without all the hassle that goes along with nitros, as far as the power thing maybe someone could tell me what curves I should be useing, should I just go 100 100 100 100 100 in idle up will this cook my battery or whatever, at the moment ime running
100 80 80 80 100, I would very much like too know if its safe to run at full throttle as ive always found the more power available the less chance of smacking down.
Oh by the way im running about 9 degrees up and down zero in the middle but this may go up to 12 depending on what I find the heli can take without catching fire.

here is my setup

cc 60 esc
cc 10 bec
401 gyro
85 mg's cyclic
9650 tail

I bought the motor from a member here on rr, all I know is it is blue with a blue heatsink(nothing special) below link has it for $69
It has worked for me but I am not hard on my birds at all!!!

I am not exactly sure of the amps I am pulling, but 9 minutes of circuits, stall turns, etc...w/ 3s2p 4400 air thunders and the batts are just warm, never hot.

Hi Spitfire1,
It all depends on how you connect the batteries together as to whether you get a 6S1P pack or a 3S2P (Like I want). Ifyou connect the two packs in series, then you get a 6S1P pack. If you connect in parallel, then you get 3S2P. Look at it this way, Series connection doubles Voltage, and parallel connection doubles capacity.

Provided your batteries are up to task you should be able to run straight 100, 100, 100, 100, 100 on your idle-up curve. Brushless motors are most efficient when running wide open. Actually by running straight curves, your packs and motor might come down slightly cooler.

smcbmw,
Thanks for the help. That lets me know the limitations amp wise as far as the motor is concerned. I am glad to see your set-up works, that means I can use some packs from my 450 and mnot have to buy all new packs.

Yeah, the price of those larger packs are not something I want to spend. I'd rather buy two packs for my 450. Good luck and let us know how your setup ends up.....

Thanks, It should turn out pretty well. I am excited about this heli. More than my 450 or my Raptor 50 Titan. I think this will be about the perfect size. large enough to cope with a descent breeze, but small enough to take out to my back yard. Thanks for all the advice.

thanx for the feedback, I think 100 t curves should be ok, my flying style is rather agressive allthough thats not so much due to my skill level rather the lack of it, im trying to learn to calm my flying down but I have bad nerves and shaky fingers which makes stick banging the norm for me, i have just been given a voyager e new in the box and built it up, it is one heavy underpowered heli but this might be a good way to force me to use better collective management, it has one of the largest 3s batteries ive ever seen that came with it, im chargeing it as a 3000 ma, but its about 3 times the size of a normal 2000 trex pack. just too heavy.

may sound like stupid question, thats why ive not started new post, but does anyone know who it is that makes hdx.
Is it a company called sonix that makes hdx, or a company called HDX.
Be nice to know what my heli is, cant seem to find any particular home website or anything so far, I also own an RJX and always wondered if there the same manufacturers.

Thanx for the reply, ime very impressed with this heli, will have to see how it holds up with the test of time before I go too far but so far im extremely happy I bought it, I just love the way it performs on a 4s pack due to there low cost, that was my main concern before I bought it, I was concerned that a 4s wouldent be enough, but I was wrong and i am glad about that. Im sure it would be even better with more expensive packs, but the way its going so far I dont see any need.

motor is 1050 kv, with i think 19 t pinion, but ime only saying its 19 because thats what it says the motor requires on the website of the bloke I bought it off, I dont even know what size the speedy is, a guy commented the other day that it looked like a 70 amp, ide need to remove it to find out, when I need to do some maintainance ill know more I dident build this heli, when I enquired into buying a hdx 500 sa, the seller said that it wouldent have what I need in a heli as far as performance and apparently the SA version has a very slow flip rate,at the time I only had 500 bucks which wasent enough for a 3dx so it just so happened that he had one that they had modified a bit in order to develop a 3d capable head which could be adapted to the hdx sa a little while back, I know these head setups are now commercialy available in Australia, im not sure if they were testing this new head just for the australian market or if they were testing directly for Hdx, I know the guy who owned this heli before me does test for rjx and is currently working on there new extreme 90 model due out soon, but im not completely sure how they fit in as far as sonix hdx goes, I think they may have tested for them but cant say for sure, any way all I know is its not a 3dx, its some kind of hdx, I noted that another hdx sa that i seen had a completely different frame than my one where the batterry slid underneath, my batterry sits at the front sloped, and also my servos connect directly to the swash in the same manner as a trex 450, maybe you could share some light on what model my one is or if its just a hybrid of some kind, i will post a pic, but not the best, ill take a closer pic later of the frame.

hope pictures work this time

Can anyone identify what hdx model this is for me?
I would also like too know what my battery is if its 15,18 or 20c.
its 4s 3700 if anyone recognizes it, and my speedy may be marked on the underside, but if its obvious to anyone.

sorry bout the other photos, i cant get this damn photo thing worked out this will have to do.

Im adding to this post as I look through these forums and it looks like its probly a hdx v2, but when I look at pictures of the 3dx I cant see any difference between it and the v2

Casn you get a closer picture of the head? If it is a T-rex style it is the HDX V2. If it is a Lepton style Then it's a 3DX.
