e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > Ion-X2 power setup???

Hi guys,

Is there a better engine in terms of power/performance than the Acro 32-3 for the Ion X2?

How fast are you running your motor on your set up (rpm?)? (which blade size?)

Max autonomy with such a bird? (I know it depends on the battery but...)

Just evaluating available choices

Final question... does it worth it?

The NEU 1521 1.5 Y F is a monster. I have one in the used section if you need one.

Yeap, the Neu 1521/1.5Y is another great motor option for the Ion-X2. Here's a video of mine on 12S:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT2bRmpqnbM

On 12S the motor should be spinning somewhere under 47,000 rpms. I have it geared and governed to spin 690mm blades at 2040rpms (unloaded). It's probably just under 2000 in a hover. Not sure if it's "better" than the Actro 32-3 though, since I have yet to try one in my Ion. Scorpion will be releasing some powerful and more affordable 12S motors soon for this size helicopter.

Did you mean, maximum authority?? If you want the most power then you definitely want to go 12S. I find the Extreme 3850 V2 packs provide the best overall balance of light weight 3D performance and flight time. If you fly in very cold weather conditions then larger capacity packs would perform better.

Is it worth it?? YOU BET!! Good luck.

The Neu 1521/1.5Y has a pretty high Kv at 1050rpm/v. On 12S, I run a 21.56:1 gear ratio which over-gears it to about 2200rpms. Then I run 75% governor to achieve 2040rpm unloaded.

To achieve this 21.56:1 gear ratio I went with the largest 100t double stacked main gear. This allowed me to run a bigger 17t motor pulley (instead of a 16t) which is easier on the belt.

Good luck if you decide to go this route and let us know if you need more info.

Bad news

Well.... my Neu1521-1.5Y died on Wednesday . I was in the inverted portion of a large loop, managed to auto it down but the tail rotor landed in a small bush. The bush locked the tail rotor which then stripped the bevel gear up front. Taking it all apart now.

I had maybe 150 flights on the Neu (10S and 12S combined). The motor had a lot of power, but I was pulling peaks of 3600 Watts through it on 12S. This may have considerably decreased it's life. I will either try an Actro32-3 next or a Scorpion motor if it's released soon enough.

Chachin,

Sorry to hear about your Neu failure. I think that one problem using the neu on the Ion-x2 is that there is no motor shaft support above the belt pinion. This has to be pretty hard on the motor bearings given that there is a bit of belt tension pulling on it. I do not think that the Razor has a support bearing either.

I don't know, but you might find the same thing happens with the Actro 32's as well. I think that Bobby Watts went to a 8mm Actro motor shaft which seemed to help things a bit.

Sounds like you had a pretty good save!

Cheers,
Tom C
