HI CHAPS,
just wondering what kind of starter battery is best.
i have just moved up to a 60 heli and my starter wont turn it over.
im confident the starter is ok (sulavan dynatron) but the battery is a 12v gel cell 6 Ah .
are there any more powerfull gel cells or do most of you use automotive btys.
not keen on using 24 volts cos it seems quite vicious.
thanks

I use the 12v 7A battery that came with my starter box with no problems. The dynatron should have no problem starting a 60. Are you sure that the battery is fully charged? or that the engine is not flooded? My dynatron has no problems starting my OS 91.

You ned set-up like this. That's two 7 cell 1800's in series. This thing will start a Harley. Best of all you don't have to schlepp back to your field box if the engine dies.

Get yerself down to your local motorcycle shop and get yerself one of the new-type sealed lead-acid batteries, a CTX7 or even the CTX9 will sort you out. They have loadsa power, and are able to dump it quick, which is what you need. I have seen the alarm-backup-type batteries not producing enuff output when required. A CTX9 will start a CBR600 from cold no bother so your starter should fly round. If you are anywhere in the Northwest email me and I will sort you one out mail=order from my bike-shop buddy, at a good price of course.

ItsBent,

if you know of more than one place that sells them please let me know of all of them.

Cheers,

Yes - What Rotary Flyer Says

Those bigger amp batteries with the big lead terminals will give up the juice better for those cold/high compression starts.

You can keep it in your automobile to jump yourself off if needed.
Plenty of juice for fast field charging those hiamp flight/transmitter bat pacs also.

Despite what Tim Taylor says, more power is not always better. I use a hobbico 90 powered by my field box to start my OS 61wc If the engine does not start I remove the glow starter and move the throttle stick all the way up. I tilt the heli a little on its side with the muffler or pipe towards the ground. With a firm grip on the head I hit it with the starter again for a second or two. Then set it back on the ground, move the throttle stick back down, reattach the glow starter and hit it with the hobbico again. That always works for me when I have a starter related engine problem.

If you are prone to getting these steps out of order or you are not careful about glow starter removal, you should do something else but similar. Instead of tilting the heli, remove the glow starter and glow plug and hit it with a hobbico (or other brand) for a second or two. This is the safest way.

The result will be the same, your just trying to get the excessive fuel out of the engine. There is no reason why a Hobbico 90 or equivalent on a standard 12v can't turn over that engine with ease. If you just buy a bigger starter and battery you do take a chance of damaging the engine. I've heard horror stories from guys who broke or stretched their connecting rods. Not worth it.

I use these and they work great as long as they are fully charged.

can turn over

A 12V cordless drill will have more torque, more duration, is easier to handle, has variable speed, is cheaper, (18GBP from Argos), lighter,

and your wife thinks that you bought it to put up her shelves.
...
Why do people still buy these 50 Amp bricks?

battery setup

I use the Hobbies & Heli's battery holder, 2 7 cell 1900 packs, and a Hobbico TorqueMaster 180 starter. This should turn over my 91 without a problem. Just assembled it the other night. Currently for my 46, I have the same setup with an old Tower Hobbies starter and 2 1500 6 cell packs.

col,

what heli is this engine in? I think everyone knows that the Sullivan Dynatron is THE heavy duty starter capable of a 24V power supply. So, if the Dynatron will not work, then none of the other starters that people are using even with 14.4V or 16.8V will either. There must be some other problem like the fan nut coming loose and binding the starter or a flooded engine, dead starter battery. As SemiArticulate points out, using brute force to turn the engine over may destroy your connecting rod.

Thanks Alex and every one else for your ideas, in answer to your question alex its a webra 61 P5 AAR in a futura se. heli's ok though and my friend also has dramas starting the same engine in an xcell pro.
went out today to the model shop to get a dead cert this battery will start anything battery and guess what!!!!

so now iv'e got two 12v gel cells i'll go the conrod crunchin 24v route cos i know that really spins it. i'll just be extra care full to make sure the motor is dry before i spin it up.
Cheers.

I got my battery holders from Rick's. I tried the cordless drill but found it to be marginal at best. It was also bulky (won't fit in the field box) and the clutch wouls slip causing it bang the engine around, not good.

col.

I also have a Webra 61 P5 AAR (Freya).

It was a bitch to start when new until I realised that it had to be primed with fuel before starting. Just turn it a few times with throttle open fully(WITHOUT GLOW PLUG STARTER ATTACHED). Then attach glow starter and fire her up. After it is run in properly, it should start easier. More often than not there is not enough fuel going through to the engine.

The manual is crap - it gives you the wrong information! Just start main needle at about 2 turns open and go from there.

My Webra 50`s are the same, once wet inside they spin over no problem.
