QuickWorldWide Ep and Wet Fuel Helis > Quick 8 To Fly Conversion (NOW WITH VIDEO)

Well after seeing the new fly, I was hooked on getting one, but just took me a while to decide to tear down my Quick 8 to convert over. I would rather have both, but since they are somewhat the same, that didn't make sense. I opted to purchase the frame parts from Quick to update the heli to a Fly.
my reason for converting...
#1 Very good looking
#2 Battery weight is closer to center of heli.
#3 I can now experiment with A123 Cells since the new design allows for various battery configs. Below are a few before and after pics....

I did not find time to fly yet, but did hover a bit this evening and things seem to be as they were with the Quick 8 (very stable)

Hopefully i can get some video and flight pics to post here later.

Hi Eric , thanks for the pics.
Please keep me(us) posted on the new "8". They look realy neat, and I like the battery set-up on it , looks like you have plenty of room for just about any battery configuration you want to use?

edit;
It looks like you lost quite a bit of weight changing over to the new frames...

Hopefully I will find time to take it out this Sunday. Things have been so busy with having a new born. But we are training her young on the simulator. Only three months with some stick time on realflight....

Just got in from flying the fly. I didnt get much time on it today, only 3 flights. The heli does roll much better than the quick 8 did. I was not able to do a good loop, but should be able to after I get the heli setup properly. Another club member video taped the first flight and will be posting it online in a few days. I will update this post with the link for it. In the mean time, if anyone could help with setting up the throttle and pitch curves, please let me know.

Video to come soon....

Copy and paste the link into the browser. Keep in mind this is the first flight and I didnt have it set up properly yet. My curves are way off and I had a very close call in this video.

Had a little pucker factor there didn't ya... Gets the blood going. I'm running a good bit of expo on mine to tone down around center on the cyclic. It will flip over pretty quick. I' check out my curves and get you a pm on what I'm running if you like

Yes, it was a scary moment, but it made it I do need to add some expo to it next time I fly. This new design can really flip. It's hard to see in the video when it rolls, but it does roll very nicely. You have to listen for the blade chopping noise to find it in the video. I would really appreciate seeing where you have your throttle curve set, you can really hear in the video how bad mine is. I need to get a tach on the heli to see where I am at in hover. Maybe a trip to QWW is in need to get this done quickly. What pack are you running in yours?

I'm running the 6s 4000mah in mine. It's a TrueRC pack that QWW sells. I'm actually running my CC60 at 75% across the board in governor mode. I'm not sure what the rpm is, but I think it is somewhere around 1800 right now. I know that the guys at QWW have been running them at 80%...I'm not sure if they run governed, which I think is around 2k on the head. I'll stick a tach on mine and see exactly where it is and let you know. On my pitch, I'm getting +/- 11.

I tried 75% across the whole curve as well to only find out that my speed control does not support governor mode. My pitch is set to +9-9 I could go to almost 11 but figured 9 was enough for me. Are you running with the ESC from QWW or did you use your own? I currently have an 80 AMP that came with the QUICK 8 combo.

I got the CC 60 amp when I got the bird from QWW. Works really well. I thought that they were using for the most part CC ESC's on the electrics. I don't think that Irwin uses governor mode on his Fly either. When I tested it without the governor on, I think I was running 70-70-65-70-70 in idle up. It seemed to do pretty well. I thought most all heli ESC's would do governor mode now.....guess not.

WE CAN PUSH THE PROFORMANCE

i Eric_PA

Good morning...We are here, come on down.....IN Gov mode the throttle curve MUST be 85-75-85...the 15% wiggle room is so you don't blow a battery or ESC...When you go too 85% & fly at that position the motor continues to draw more & more...reaching 100% sometimes...if you set it at 100% & draws 115% then you have a problem...we have bigger pinions too gear the head RPM without changing the throttle curve...

You will get a shorter flight with a bigger pinion but that is normal trade off for more performance.

also we are making a 26 tooth counter gear to reduce the tail RPM so not cause a tail failure with increase head speed.

I don't know what ESC I have. I have been told to run about 70%, but it is not enough for my setup for some reason. I am running 75% but when I introduce collective it kills the head speed. It seems like I need to be in the 90% area with this esc, but I'm not sure if that would make things correct.

Good deal Eric. They will get you fixed up. I'm going to have to see if I can get my daughter to do some filming of my Fly doing it's thing......hopefully I won't have any pucker factor situations...

I got the Fly out today and found some help at the field. They showed me how my curves were very bad and had me reset everything in my radio for this heli. I must say... IT IS INTIMIDATING NOW!!! It has more than enough power and very responsive. Basically I was flying with +5 degrees at center stick in idle up mode with a low throttle curve. I have so much to learn about setup now I have to go back and set my t450 up correctly as well.

Well here is a youtube link to a flight a couple of weeks ago after fixing the curves. Keep in mind I didn't edit and add the text to this video. Another member who is into Align wrote it all....
I will also post this in the video thread
