I put the rear fins on yesterday, and the Evo is ready to put in - all flight testing is done and its tuned in quite well now

To hold the fins up against the body while the epoxy set, I used some large velcro and two rubber bands to act as a soft clamp - worked better than I thought it would. Tonight I will glue the windows in, and use screws for the windshield so it can be removed whenever needed. I also hope to test fit the mechanics and mark screw and hole locations tonight before gluing up the windows. I am getting closer, I can almost see it flying Anyway, here are some pics:

Jim,
I used a very thin two sided tape to put my widows in and it works great. I just cut very thing strips and lined the outer edges of the windows with it. Works and holds great. The great thing is you don't see the ugly screws and you can remove them easily if need be.

I wish you would get yours done

I used trim sheet. Works like a charm. I do one blade. Then I line the 2nd blade up to the first so they are precisely the same locations on each blade. That way I don't have to fool around with re-balancing the blades.

It is amazing how many comments I get from other flyers about how great the blades look. It is one of those easy cheap modifications that make a huge difference.

Looking nice Jim! Can't wait to see it fly. Will that Hirobo pipe work in place of the Century Scale muffler?
BrentC

That can't be good!

I ended up putting a basic Mavrikk 50 pipe in there instead, works well.

Update: I have done alot this week. The mechanics didnt fit well with the full radio tray and my beefy Duralite, so I hacked the front of the tray off and relocated a few items. I also moved the gyro to the rear of the heli because it would interfere with installation when it was mounted up high in front like I had it. I also pulled the header tank and muffler to ease the process of fitting things up. They will be put back on for final install.

All the holes for the fan, tail, exhaust, bolts, etc were drilled and dremeled with the small sanding drum. A million test fits later and it is all ready to install. I glued the strap boards and top windows in last night and will be putting the lower windows in tonight and mounting the GoSlow to the mechanics on the side of the tray or on the rear bulkhead on final install. Everything is pretty much done now, should be able to get it all installed tonight. I am also going to tape the blades like gadgetdude has, looks great

Should be doing the test hops and flying this weekend if the weather holds well Here are the random pics of my progress this week:

Looking real good!!!!!

The job you did for the top swash looks really nice and smooth

I took mine out this morning and did some test hovering. I got a new radio JR 9303 and was working out some trim. Still find it hard to hit gear toggle switch smoothly Back to the sim.

You are going to be so happy flying this thing. Every time I fly it I have this huge grin on my face. It looks so great

Well, all is done: I finished things up on Friday afternoon, got it all set and ready. Saturday morning took it to fly, started it up, and took off. The heli flies great - but I had MAJOR vibrations in the heli. After spending some time on the bench with it, we tracked down some problems with the engine/fan area. Everything was dialed and balanced, but obviously something else is not quite right.

The engine is used and after teardown, something feels not quite right with the crank, so I am replacing it this week and while I am at it I will redo the fan hub, etc just to be sure. We are quite sure it was the motor causing the grief.

Anyway, the heli is great and I am excited to give it a go again this weekend I will be putting the stock skids back on during the week to give it a few test hops to make sure the vibrations are no more. Not sure how I missed this during testing, but no harm - no foul Anyway, I will update with some shots from next weeks flying with the retracts up, etc. Here are the final build pics, some poses, and a few in-flight pics

The Go Slow works great - no complaints at all with the unit.

I do,,, first it does work great but if it had some end points it would be the... how do they say it....cats meoooooowwwww.

If you have a radio with servo slow and you have 3 extra channels, mix them, set the endpoints, much easier.

If not than the goslow is your friend

Hey Jim.
Looks GREAT!!!!!

Is the vibration when you are flying it? If so, that is another matter which sounds like you will find the problem. If you are talking about vibration when you spool up or down, that is common and I don't beleive there is anyway around it. I had it out flying last weekend and our Club President has the same heli but in green. When he saw mine vibrate he told me that his does the same thing and that any others he had seen do it also. I believe the real weak point is the retracts. All the inertia from the blades finding center is emphasized right to those wire retracts. I find i can eliminate it slightly with a faster spool up and down. You could try it.

Thanks, I noticed that ground resonance as well but figured it was just the nature of the beast and a different spooldown process would fixit, as you said . The vibration I am referring to is an extremely high speed one that resonaates the entire heli in flight, 99% sure that I will get it taken care of with the motor and fan hub switch - then I can get to flying this beauty a little bit

SOrry in advance if you mentioned this priviously in your build thread (didn't go back and review) but did you secure the mechanics with the included 2 tabs, or did you do 4?

I did the two tabs, I thought of that too - but it is plenty stiff with just the two so I left it as is. I may add a second set if needed. This vibration is coming from the drivetrain, so once I tame it down I think things will settle in better

"Vibe" Trick....

Jim it looks GREAT.... you are going to fall in love with this one!!!! They are just so nice looking in the air and on the ground, but when flying you have to be careful that you remember you have to fly it!!!
As for the shake...as you spool up or when you are flying.... have someone note the EXACT location your throttle stick is in when you just begin to pick up the "vibe".... then shut it down and go to your pitch curve and at that specific point lower you pitch by 2-3 points at a time and then try the spool up again.... and you can also increase your throttle curve value up at that point a bit along with the pitch change.... this will help unload the blades and let the power come up a bit easier.... just a timing issue mostly...
With the added weight and sitting on the wheels the pitch and throttle curves are just a little different then on the plain pod and boom.....I had this on the one that I did to and when I was done adjusting there was nothing shaking... just take your time and a little at a time just like the sanding you did (and did NICELY!!!!)
Let me know if this helps you out.... and best of luck with a beautiful machine!!!!!
Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!
