Safety - RC Helis are not toys > I am scared to death!

Hello,

I am new here and also new to helicopters. I am 55 years old and grandfather and I am concerned about accidents that we see here.

Is this that dangerous? Could it be for a young grandfather like me who don't want to be hurt but want to realize his old dream to fly a RC helicopter?

Thank you for your encouragements and please don't laugh,

W. Redmond

hey.
I think as long as you keep safety in mind and respect these machines for what they can do then I'm confidant you will be just fine

It is a fantastically rewarding hobby and I just wish I had found it sooner

Best regards

take the time to learn good safety practices. Get a sim. Find someone who will help you learn to fly. When you ask someone to teach you, make sure that you see them in action and trust their safety practices.

I know it is easy to become alarmed when you see photos of horrific injuries, but it is important to put things in perspective.

If the risks were too high, nobody would fly R/C helicopters. The most important thing you need to do is think of a heli as having the potential danger of a chainsaw.

Provided you follow prudent safety procedures, there is no reason to be concerned. The fact that you are reading this forum is itself an excellent pointer to your becoming a safe R/C heli operator, as you are showing that safety is on your mind - a huge first step!

It's right to be respectful.

I think any encounter with the larger helicopters would be serious. I gather there are several million of the smaller helicopters in circulation and whilst I'm sure they could kill people, they don't seem to do so as a matter of course.

A bit like a kite, but 500 times more expensive

its kinda like driving a car. you wear your seatbelt, obey the speed limit, and follow the rules of the road and you'll be fine.
take care of your heli, pay attention to what's around you, learn at your own pace, follow safety guidelines when starting and flying and you'll be fine.
they're about the same, some will crash and some get hurt but all you can do is your part of keeping it as safe as possible..
I don't care if your 90, if you want to fly then get a sim or some help and learn. if an 18 mo old can learn on a sim then there really is no age restriction in this hobby if your capable. JMO

its good that your scared, it means your aware theres a danger, as long as you have this awarness of danger there is less lkely for something dangerouse to happen (if that makes sense)
if you didnt have this fear then you could be over confident and make big mistakes.
welcome to the hobby

Retred,

Like everyone said, welcome to the hobby. You made a responsible decision to check out the safety of the hobby, and started asking questions....

You will be a pilot that I would have no problem flying-pitting next to.

Find a good mentor,check.

Get a premium Sim, check.

Get a heli that your friends are familiar with and can help you with, check.

Fly with a hoop till you start FF 8's, check.

Be prepared to get addicted to really fun par tof the hobby, and you will find yourself buying more than 1 Heli, and looking for the best tools to work on them.

Go watch and read all of Finless Bob's videos and tutorials on HeliFreak.com.

I was a planker exclusively until last July, having been around them in the club for years, I just never tried one. I got a TRex 450, hooped it, and now own 3 nitros and 4 Electrics.

flying 3D aircraft, and regular planks for 35+ years ,I had good left hand skills already, you need them.

WELCOME ABOARD.....

I was in the same position as you 2 yearS ago. I had 2 dAngerous senarios (1 was not my fault) but luckly I've spent countless hours on the simulator and that probably saved me a lot of money and my life. The best way to prevent accidents is to practice on the sim emergency manouvers (eg. push right stick up if help drift too close to me tail in).

PREVENT BY PREPARING AND PRACTICE (3Ps)

Being scared is a very good thing...at least this way you will always be very careful and therefore most likely avoid accidents.

I wish I could fly 24/7
