FYI

That compitition only takes place in Japan and is only among the japanese manufactures. It's nice that the Sceadu won, just I don't think it would have won on the global scale.

Yes, I actually said that.....

I do believe that the Sceadu deserves the award for the 30-50 class this year. That Sceadu is one fine helicopter. I also believe that the Freya deserved it for last year and I believe that for the 60 size this year the award should go to the Fury.

Wha..? Then what about the Freya 2001 Award? The site said nothing about it being Japanese only.

Simple question for you to ask your self, anytime you see awards given out. Who is the group saying that this award is what it is. What body of modelers has proclamed that this award is legitimate?

Did you ever notice how many stupid little awards are given out on the net? Did you know that 90% of them are homemade?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying at any point that the Sceadu doesn't deserve an award. I am just skeptical of such awards. What justifies it, and how was the voting done. Did any AMA or IHRCA person receive a ballot? How about the BMA folks? See what I mean...

I could go into my photoshop programs and create an award too. But who would want the VOLKUL award anyway. HAHAHA

Model of the year award origin

Dear Ken/Volkul,

While I don't know about the specifics, but I am sure that this "The international best R/C helicopter of the year award" is not fake. Every year a panel of judges (Mostly Europeans) that represents different segments of R/C would join together, nominate and vote for this award. The award will be presented every year on the Nurnberg Toy Fair in Germany.

Yes you could use Photoshop to cut and paste photos, graphics, and even make your own award trophy, but do you think if a factory as famous and well know as Hirobo in this segment of R/C would do it?

Regards,

Jason

How many models were entered in this "contest"? The award isn't taken seriously by most people as they are aware of the circumstances surrounding the number of entrants. Wait till next year when Hirobo doesn't have a new model to enter, the award will go away and then there'll be an award for "best blue low noise tailblades"
If the award was as prestigious as Hirobo would have you believe then other manufacturers would have entered. Call up Tim S. at Miniature Aircraft and ask him why he didn't enter the fury in the contest for model of the year? He will probably say "what the heck is that?"

Jason, That's the kind of information I was fishing for. Now we know what the award is truly based on.

Thanks!

Award?

I thought the reward for manufacturing items is sales. The product that has the most sales wins. And, in that arena time will tell.

My suspicion is that the r30 is going to be hard to beat. Isn't the r30 the best selling heli ever? Just curious!

Cheers.......

I'd be curious to see the list of competitor as well. Quite a few new models last year in the competion, just wonder if more than half of them where even included.

Crunch all you want, they will make more. Please use rr's pm feature to contact me.

I agree. Someone needs to whip out the list of compeditors. And lets see who compared apples to oranges. Becouse I for one would have voted for the Fury over the Scooby Do. Not that I have anything against it. I just think that the Fury is a nicer ship. Anyone agree?

To knock a contest because it was held or based in Japan is kind of like saying ferrari makes ****ty cars... 98% of our stuff comes from Japan and you wonder why everyone over there gets their stuff before us? Its my understanding that we are but a small segment of the R/C Heli market... We may think we are big bad and important...but might not be so.

It would be interesting to see some numbers on percentage of sales in each country.

Hmm, how many hardcore 3D pilots are there in Japan? They mainly fly F3C & there are thousands of competitors. They have regional competitions just to whittle down the list!

Im sure there is some very serious 3D in Japan.
I am not surprised the Sceadu won. The Freya won last year and a Freya with a better power to weight ratio and lower cost would seem a very logical contender. I thought there would be no way it would win just because the Freya won last year. I thought that they would pick something else just because they wanted to avoid this very debate. The fact that they did not go that route made me think the award might amount to something. I am also not sure they have "compeditors" that enter. Every award I have heard of was given to people, groups, or things choosen by the organization that didn't ask for entrants. That would make the difference between an award and a contest. For example, if I wanted to make a "SimiArt award" and give it to the Fury. I would not need MA to enter or give me permission. They could accept or deny the award. But unless the award is defined better it does seem a bit worthless.
