Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Eye Protection, 'Nerd Cool' is in this year..........

I've been trying to get all of my non club flying heli chums to fly with some sort of eye protection. You see none of them are into this sudo 'cool' style of eye wear available from all good mags and model shops myself included. You know what I mean, those odd shaped strangely tinted mirror jobs that are worn by just about everybody at the 3D comps. Well I just hate those things and I look such a prat wearing them. So I've opted for the 'nerd cool' look and am useing the new generation of non tinted safety glasses. This is the type of eyewear favoured on building sites everywhere and I have to say that it's non trying to be cool look is well.... cool.
So are they as safe as your '3D fliers' shades?
Well in the intrest of science I lined up on my firing range 3 pairs of safety glasses and 1 pair of regular 3D fliers shades. With a distrance to target of 20m and all pairs held in position I am pleased to announce that all glasses failed to shatter and would be more than able to withstand the impact of any wayward helicoper component, although not the actually helicoter itself!!
Result.... Well now I am 'Nerd Cool' and safe!!!
So how do I look in them? Well I would post a picture but all of my glasses are shot to hell, so I can't.
And all the shops are shut today which means I can't fly either. Bugger!!

But if you think Austin Powers you are getting warm, YEAH BABY!!
Chics love a nerd...

Are you going to start wearing the "cool" velvet suits too? Now THAT would make a statement for sure!

Cop: Sir, have you been drinking? Driver: Why? Is there a fat girl in my backseat?

England? Firing range? What exactly did you use, vigorously hurled rocks? Harsh language? A pointed finger while saying "bang bang"?

Kudos, wearing of proper safety eyewear is always to be encouraged. The potential price of not wearing it is far too high.

Look mate, I'll have you know that a well aimed catapult can be really deadly at close range!!

Ps. Does anybody know, do you iron velvet from the inside or the outside?

I got some safety glasses, some clear and some tinted, they are a must have really in this hobby, as has just been mentioned forum, someone has just lost an eye because of a spindle failing.

Talking about Firing Ranges, check the firearms magazine and ranges for safety glasses if your one who needs "style".
Not trying to be putting anyone down by my statement, but there are some nice looking safety glasses out there on the market.

Yes I was going to have a look in my local gun shop to see what styles are in this season.
But I still like the industrial eyewear look.
As a foot note I might add that I never hover at head hight or with the tail faceing me, I have always naturally done this because it felt a bit safer. I don't think I am being paranoid, just carefull? OK and a bit paranoid.

Next, I'm thinking of getting a chainmail fence to seperate myself from the heli should anything go badly wrong, either that or a TV camera and monitor so that I can be absolutley nowhere near the heli when I am flying it.......................

Elton John's Specs?

OK, you're from the UK, surely you MUST know where Elton gets those spanky specs? I'm thinking they'd be a big hit at the local flying field! Style is oh so important...

Actually thats got me thinking, my friend has a pair of Elvis' shades that Elvis actually wore, he bought them a few years back in a Las Vagas auction! They cost him more than Howard Hughes paid for one of his hotels back then.
Now they are '70s cool man'.......... nah too expensive and rare, besides I could never get past the 24hour armed guard he has on the glass case they are in.

BTW, you can distract the guards with a peanut butter - marshmallow sandwich

(works even better if you deep fry it... that's what killed the king!)

An exciting new development this weekend, whilst flying in Norfolk England, my friend decided that he just didn't go in for the 'Nerd Cool' thing at all. Instead he got me to try out his new invention which is a combined eye and head protection unit fused into a very, I think you'll agree, sylish future look.
Personally I think he's on another planet!

That's funny!

Is that mayonaise smeared on the inside of them?

Wifey's gonna wonder where her mixing bowls went after lunch!

Hi Vidmarv, unfortunately the anti-mist/fog systems were malfunctioning on these particular prototypes at the time of the photocall.

Prototypes

Yeah, there are bugs in every prototype. I suggest you release them anyway, take feedback and offer an upgrade for a fee. That's that way microsoft does it!

Hi Folks, this time in the interest of science I have prepared a photo study of myself to illustrate the comparison between 'Cool' and 'Nerd Cool'

So here goes..........

Below are 3 shots that were taken of me wearing 'Cool' eye protection, 'No' eye protection and 'Nerd' eye protection.

You will see in the picture above that the glasses in the COOL catagory are, although COOL on some, not so cool on me.
Next..

In the middle picture you will notice an absence of eye protection on me, this causes a swing in the 'NERDOMETRE' towards the 'NERD' look.
Fact: It has been scientificlly proven that any application of eyewear will generally swing the wearers looks towards the COOL look.
Next...

There are some exceptions however as shown in the next photo where my simple application of the NERD type eyewear sends the NERDOMETRE off the scale!!
Notice also the effect this NERD eyewear has on my features.
True, this shot of me was taken at a differant time of day and under differant lighting but it's only the wearing of the glasses that create the final effect.
I have also noticed the effect that it has on any female that I encounter when either at work or in my daily life. As a result I have found that I cannot go anywhere with my safety glasses on and get away unscathed. As a result my girlfriend has conviscated my glasses and now only lets me wear them at home.
But as far as she is concerned, she likes me in the picture on the right much more than in the other two. This is a bit depressing for me, as I now have to wear my protective glasses all the time at home, even in bed, but never females in the area.

Now I know that THIS type hobby doesn't attract any nerds at all, (All the nerds are plank fliers ) but they should be represented and I feel that some kind official nerd range should be productionised, so that we can all be 'Nerd Cool' and safe.

And finally........

Stop Press!! I am sure delighted to know that the Walker Skull Spheres with now working Antimisting system are to be produced under licence by 'Baush and Lomb' in a limited edition production run. These should soon be available in all good model shops...........

It's OK Bell. I make my kids and I do too wear shooting glasses when flying. Loosing an eye would just suck too much to take the chance and we're are already in the habit when shooting so why not?

My 13 yro daughter fired the Ruger for the first time yesterday, nearly bonked herself on the head.
