Align T-REX 600N 700N > Align makes good on my DEFECTIVE muffler (17 plus bad...)

How many have had an issue with this muffler? I know I am out of warranty but I only have a couple of gallons.

Have had the Trex since since September, two gallons breakin, another 2 or 3 gallons since then, today I hear this noise

Shake the heli and yup, the baffle in the muffler is loose.

How common is this I wonder?

What muffler should I buy now? If this is too common of an issue maybe I dont want to buy a new Align muffler?

UPDATE
here is the list I got tonight off of runryder

I have about 80-100 flights through mine with 0 problem (knock on wood). I also know of many other people flying theirs very hard with no problem. I'm only aware of 1 person who is starting to have the same issue you are, so I would guess that it's not very common.

Same here - 2 600's for MANY flights and no baffle issues. And mine are from the first batch! I think that there are not as many breaking as you hear about on RR...it's probably just a fluke.

my pipe started rattling after about 60 flights. i have just kept flying without any performance issues, only the annoying tinking sound when you shake it. my buddies pipe started to rattle after about 20 flights. he bought another and after about 30 flights it happened again. neither one of us can tell a performance issue with the loose baffle so we just fly it like normal.

so I can now count 5 bad mufflers maybe 6 after searching on this forum. That seems like a lot to me

Out of what, probably 100,000 sold. Pretty good odds that they won't fail. I bet you Align is selling 10 to 1 the number of mufflers over anyone else. Thus you hear about breakages. I remember a lot of MPII's breaking when they came out too...

Add your name below IF I did not get you. I do not think it was just the first batch.

I know jagnz and I would tend to agree with you but, I dont see anywhere close to the number of "broken baffles" on the MP2, MP5, or any other 50 sized mufflers. 1-10 is about almost and exceptable rate, (I worked QC back in the day) Still when we had 10% failure we started doing 100% testing until we sorted out the issue.

Its a fine looking muffler, I think it has a high failure rate, I just dont have enough stats to back it up yet.

Oh well maybe Ill have to look into the Hatori 522, same price might be the same power, but I guess its not as "pretty"

(I had not heard about the MP2 failures.)

I agree, Align QC COULD be better but as long as your e/retailer replaces the muffler for you (as they should), it should be all good. Maybe just have a spare on hand just in case?

I would go with the hatori. Best combo in my opinion and in all I ever had, I never broke one.

I had a baffle let go at about 100 flights, and the mount break in flight bout 40/50 flights later. Darn the hitori sounded quiet afterwards... LOL

They replaced one and that one did the same thing. Now I'm waiting for another one but I love my hitori.

I really like the Align muffler on the 50... I've had 2 of the baffles let go and I'm still running them... big thanks to Ron's!

mod

anyone have a mod? is it possible.

Why not drill a small hole and put a pin or screw in place somehow?

I have this happen on one pipe. I'm sending it back to Align.

IT's what I do.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The 522 runs better than the Align and makes more power, and as a bonus the baffles dont come loose.
The SB 50 is only a muffler not a tuned muffler, the only thing going for it is it's quiet.
The MP 2 made good power but were a bit loud, they cracked at the weld.
The MP5 is quiter but doesn't make as much power as the 522 or MP2,but is a little better than the SB 50.

The SAB 50 is the same muffler as the 522 but cost about $30 or %40 more because your paying for the JK or BW name.

Mod, you shouldnt have to fix a defective product. I know its a pain to try and get it replaced, I just dont think modding it to fix it would be a good long term solution.

There are other mufflers on the market. The manufacturer who builds a better product will end up selling more product and rightfully so. I have never had a muffler go bad and have flown for quite some time. I would chalk it up to a fluke if it werent a repetitive thing. (some of you folks have gone back to the koolaid repeatedly

Maybe carry a spare for some thing, consumables, Blades, belts, maybe gears, spindles, main shafts. Hey maybe Align should sell thier mufflers in a two pack Or the redline 50 engine?

No Its a major part and has no moving parts(shouldnt anyway)
Backup muffler would be fine it it werent used in such a short time. A lot of these failures seem to be very early on in the mufflers life, I mean mine looks brand new.
