Just thought I would share this one with you flybarless fans! After great sucess with my T-rex 600N (see other posts) I have decided to take what I have learnt over the Winter to the Synergy for the Summer.

Setup is as Follows Using the Mikado V-Bar,

Synergy N9,
Shortened Main Shaft,
Hyper Hub,
Vibe 90 Torque Drive with custom machined ends,
Kasama Tail Grips,
Kasama Main Grips with Custom Ball ends for required Spacing (36mm from Centre of T Block),
Vario 12mm Swashplate Driver,
Brushless Futaba 451/251 Servo's,
Scott Gray Reactor X,
CSM Carb Smart,
Aerospire Gov,
YS .91SR/MP5,
Carbon push rods,
V-Bar,
JR 2.4GHZ,
+- 14 degrees available, 10 degrees Cyclic

I'm hoping for great things with this setup. Will keep everyone posted with the results. Just waiting on the English Weather as always. Heli is electronically Setup and programmed just needs running in and a few tweaks.

My mate after my experience is going the same route with a similar setup so loads of info to come.

Ok it flies!! Never thought it wouldn't :-)

Had a problem with delayed collective response, about a 2 second lag. As the V-bar has not relation as such to the Collective output (except pump mode) it had to be mechanical/electrical. Upon inspection and fault finding it turned out to be a bad Thrust race in the head that was locking under load.

Anyway a new set fitted and test hovered and all is a OK.

Not easy to get setup between the Snow showers but its a promising start. Tail is locked in, cyclic is smooth and collective is responsive. Will tweak over the coming weeks and report back on final setup.

Exciting stuff,

MJ

Had a bit more time on the Synergy now. I have to say it is a lovely flying machine. It's rock steady in the hover and tracks really well in FFF and through flips.

The roll/flip rate need sharpening up as its a bit tame but that won't take long. All in all again very impressed with the V-Bar setup.

Best thing has to be the power gain, no hint of bogging in high demanding power situations so may play with more pitch.

Auto's like a dream, hang time is great. Was inverted autoing the V-Bar T-rex for the first time and that to has bags of reserve.

Thumbs up,

MJ

Which driver are you using the 68/50 or 68/52?

Thanks

Charles

PS your setup looks great.

Edit, also how much did you cut off the main shaft?

Thanks a lot,

I'm using the 68/50 swash driver. I also replaced the balls to vario 4mm for the swash and vario balls for the pitch arms + ball eyes, they use same diameter rod as the Synergy.

I shortened the main shaft by 10mm and used 65mm rods (same as servo) for the swash to main arm. With the stock Head block and width of the swash driver anymore wouldn't allow for a max throw of +- 15 degrees.

Thanks MJ

I'm just building the pieces to convert one of my N9s and the next obstacle is the arm extension. I'm planning on using the HyperGrips and need to make a stand-off like you did (4mm to 3mm and x length)but I don't have access to a mil. I'm also a little concerned about using a stock chrome ball due to the size of the threads. The loads on the standoff and ball will be high. Now that I hear what you did I'll have to contact some of my buddies who own Varios to see what other parts I can use.

Matt B said to use 30mm for the distance on the main blade grip ball, center, to main shaft center, and you are using 36mm. What was the basis of using the length you have? I may go with Matt's recommendation just so I can use his setup directly but did it give you some other benefit?

Thanks

Charles

Hi Chuckie,

The distance from the hub to the ball arm is really to reduce the overall throw of the main blades due to losing the hiller arm. I worked out 36mm and checked with Duncan Osbourne and he recommended 33-36mm just confirming my thoughts. This will in turn give you a sensible figure on the collective comp in the V-bar it really wants to be in the region of 60-80. I found 12mm was min distance usable without modifying or removing the servo savers and the small Quick UK Ali arms are perfect and super strong.

I have Hypergrips as well and having some custom arms made. I did work out however if you took a servo holder threaded hex insert that goes in your middle bracket, cut it in half, tap 4mm one side it would give you perfect spacing, easy to do cheap and strong. I went for the 16mm 3mm stand off as it is pretty heavy duty but not useable on the Hypergrips but suits the Kasama. I'm going to have a spare head made up with the Hyper just to compare but don't expect much if any difference.
