Aerobatic FAI F3C Contest > Raptor 90 or Fury Extreme for FAI/F3C

For a long time now, I've been interested in FAI and F3C. I would like to get more practice in this style of flying, which means a dedicated machine. I have both a Rap 90 and a Fury Extreme laying around. I know there are much better machines for FAI, but until I find out how serious I'm going to be, one of these will have to do. Which would be the better machine to start with. Also what would you change on them besides buying completely new heads.

I can't speak for the Fury Extreme (which is really more of a 3D bird), but the Rapor head really doesn't need to be "changed" at all, unless you wanted to change to the SE's head (I'm not a big fan of plastic head blocks). If yours has the plastic head block, that's the one thing I'd change, and then leave the rest as-is (I fly an SE myself).

For my 2 cents, I say use the Raptor. I believe that you'll find more potential with the Raptor design than you will with the MA Extreme design, but that's just one man's opinion. Especially at this point, I say "run what you brung".

Metal head block on the Rap. Infinavation dampers installed. I guess they have to go. I just haven't had a chance to do a proper search for setup info for FAI/F3c. You know, things like blades, dampers, paddles, flybar ratios, radio setups. This is an all new ball game!

There's nothing wrong with using what you have right now. Just put the B/H mixers in the 1:1 position, use the stock TT black paddles, and have at it. It's a fine place to start.

Dont' bother with monster amounts of collective, either. 10 degrees top and bottom is plenty, with about 6 degrees of cyclic. The demands of an F3C machine are different from a 3D machine.

You really don't need to do very much in order to get started and have fun. Sure, there's a whole world of setup info you can delve into, but when you're first getting started, spend more time practicing than tweaking.

One other thought... you may want to play with a longer flybar. On my machine, the stock 475mm flybar isn't quite long enough with the TT 50g black paddles. It still wants to back up slightly in a straight headwind. I'll be playing with 500mm and 525mm flybars to see if I can get mine a little more neutral. I'm hoping it will help the roll rate a little bit as well.

Its been a lot of years since I've Flown it with stock paddles. But I still remember the rolls being very slowwww. Any ideas were I can pickup a longer bar?

Any 4mm flybar of the appropriate length will work. You could check out HeliProz (www.heliproz.com), and I'm sure they'll have one.

I believe JR has flybars available in 500 and 525mm lengths. I believe Hirobo and MA have varying lengths as well. TT, not so much...

i had a fury xtreme, lovely machine,

all i did was the change the gear ratio put flybar weights on to make the hover stable as it is a dedicated 3D machine, i changed the muscle pipe to a Hatori pipe...

I flew like this for half a season and then i decided to put a tempest FAI head on...

Really nice machine...

I have also seens the stock Raptor 90 , be used in comps, to good effect

Matt

I bought my Mother-in-law a chair for xmas, but she wouldn't plug it in

If all you've been flying is snap-and-jerk 3D, then it's going to. Remember, this is F3C. The focus is on flying and controlling the machine, not just banging hard cyclic and letting the heli *zzzip* through a move.

My style is more aerobatic, some call it slow 3d, though I do on occasion slam the sticks. I fly planes as well, pattern and IMAC style is my favorite. Your right though about the skill involved. Every mistake is visible unlike 3d were only the pilot knows if he blew the maneuver.
