Hi Folks...

1st attempt a flybarless... Does the upper and lower limites look correct???

It looks like +- 30 degrees.

Its not like normal flybar travel. You need to measure and no more than 15 for hard 3D.

Update

Put it into the air tonight...

Everything seems pretty stable but it will take some time to get used to the new feel... Different from the old flybar...

The one thing I noticed is that it really wants to fly!!! Just a light touch to the collective pitch, and it off the ground FAST...

With a total weight of over 12 pounds and a low rotor speed I was hoping it would climb into a lethargic stable hover...

It seems like it has tool much power and lift... I significantly reduced the total amount of pitch travel, but it goes from "on the ground" to "in the air" FAST...

What happens if you have too much rotor surface???

Are 700mm blades too big???

I think I will strap a couple of pounds of deck bolts to the skids and see if it helps next time...

Hi Folks (update)

Electrical glitch "reared its ugly head" big time...

I moved wiring around to see if it would help eliminate the electrical glitch I have been experiencing...

- The glitch had me worried so I strapped some old training gear back on, in case of trouble...

- Spooled up prefect, no ground resonance, very smooth...

- Moved into a hover about 1 - 3 feet, very smooth, very stable

- I can't believe how well the Helicommand actually works!!!

- My goal was to conduct at least 4-5 long hover tests to gain confidence that the electrical glitch was gone

Towards the end of the flight the GLITCH occurred and SLAMMED her into the ground...

I immediately killed power and shut down...

The crash was hard, but the damage initially looks minor...

Looking for help with a crash analysis:

- Was this an radio glitch? I am new to using the Spektrum system... I got Spektrum specifically to avoid this...

- Was it the ESC? I don't think so...

- Was it the Helicommand System??? Not sure??? The glitch did not cause cyclic movement... In fact I think the helicommand keep the rotor level throughout the crash...

I initially think it was the Spekturm System going into "failsafe mode"... I have never experienced failsafe mode so I don't know what it is like...

- The Spektrum is a 9 channel and I got an extra receiver... This means that I the 3 sets of antenna and all are oriented differently...

Any ideas????

HS10,

Sorry to hear about your glitch. I've been using a helicommand rigid on a 10s Trex600 with torque tube tail (and DX7/ar7000 radio) for a few weeks now and it has worked very well.

The HC instructions tell you to do 2 things to avoid possible interference. Firstly, to ground your tail boom and secondly, to add ferrite rings to any of the hc-to-rx leads if you have had to extend these.

Because I use a torque tube I have not bothered to ground my boom but if I was running a belt, I definitely would. Also, I did not have to extend any of the HC/Rx leads.

Another thing to check is that you do not mount the main HC unit too close (less than ~5-10mm) to any bearings. No gyro(s) seem to like this.

Last thing is to make sure your rx battery is in really good shape since the HC seems to work the servos a little harder than normal. I use an Align 6amp reg with a 2s FP evolite 2150 pack and this works very well. It puts out 5.5v and I use a 5.1v stepdown to my fut 9254 tail servo.

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck sorting this out.

Cheers,
TomC

Hi TomC

Just got done with a short test flight...

This flight was using my original Futaba PCM equipment... I installed the Futaba to determine if the glitch is related to the Helicommand or the radio system...

This time I got another type of glitch again... This seems to eliminate the Spektrum System that I was originally using to some degree...

While hovering I started to get some violent cyclic oscillation that I never seen before...

Got it back on the ground safely, but somewhat hard...

I have the Helicommnad mounted on a solid location away from the ESC and and bearing...

I use an 8 cell battery pack connected to a Duralite Voltage Regulator... The regulator is mounted as far as possible from the ESC and motor...

Thanks

HS10,

Maybe you still have too much cyclic and collective pitch. Mine are 10 deg and 13 deg respectively. I had to take my cyclic servo arms in one hole (~4mm) and used the HC PC program to set the travel limits on it's swash mixing A,E,pitch to 55,55,50%. The flybarless setups seem to ~ double the rate of movements since you are not going through a washout mixer, etc.

You can further reduce this in the rigid menu by adjusting the stick gain to something less than 10 (+100 travel). Do not use your Tx Atv's to do this, or your dual rates (although a little expo, 10-15% is ok).

Cheers and good luck,

Tom C

Hi Folks...

Having better luck... I think my electrical glitch may be gone... I will continue to use the training gear until I am sure the glitch is gone...

Hi Folks...

Did my 5th test flight today... Cold finger, snow has not started to melt yet!!!

I have gain confidence that the electrical glitch is gone... Now it's time to start adjusting things...

I notice that when I take-off there is a point when the helicopter seems to "leap into the air"... Once a get a stable hover going I notice it will assent and decend rapidly... Her is what it tried today:

Idle Up # 1 = 86% 1200 rpm / Curve 33/42/50/65/78
Idle Up # 2 = 90% not measured / Curve 33/42/51/62/73

This thing really wants to fly seems like a lot of power???
