Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > shear pin removal

Hi all,

anybody removed these shear pins from the XLV 3 blade head? They seem very tight having already tried pushing them out with a G clamp with no success.

The supplied drawing just shows retaining screws and a note to use grease during assembly.

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Paul, I wouldn't remove those pins. All I did to reverse rotor direction was simply flip the grips arm to the opposite side and I reversed the bolt direction next to the pins so that the head is on the leading edge and the nut is trailing. Also, use lock tight to secure that hardware that secures those pins. Keep it simple and enjoy that head.

I added the Rigid and although it does stabilize the head a little, I personally don't like the feel of it. I prefer to manually fly it. But the Rigid is cool for holding position for AP use.

Hi Dan,

Well, I would like to remove the pins as I want to change the blade grips and I an imagine that as soon as I try and undo the grip retaining bolt, the shaft will rotate and it is impossible to get onto the other end to hold it without removing the whole assembly.
They must be removable as both pins in each grip hinge have retaining screws. My other concern is that the pins will start to corrode inside the holes. Corrosion has already appeared on the exposed parts. Our humidity here is not good for bare metal to live in.

You running the Vario grips still Dan?

Hey Paul,

I'm running the Hobby Parts grips. They are easy to install, you have to remove the Vario washer under the thrust bearings and replace it with the HP spacer. Other than that, it's the same as removing one and reinstalling it. You'll use the two pitch change links from the VR-22 head and for the third link, use one of the lower support rods that connect just above the lower gear and replace it with a 440 threaded rod or just order another one. I'd used the 440 rod until the Vario part comes in.

The blade grip retaining bolt should be as normal. Mine torqued just fine. I didn't see any tendancy to spin within the hub. Locktite it as well....just don't use the permanent red stuff.

I set my timing by aligning the left swash control rod, with the main blade over the tail boom, to the PC link of the blade that's over the boom. That way, you can actuate the elevator and the blade over the boom shouldn't move.

Okay, thanks again Dan. I may just install the HP grips as you did and worry about the pins at a later stage.

Edit:I have been reading your's and swch900's comments about flying this head without VF stabilisation - very interesting. I'm going for 120 degree CCPM with the MAH blades running >1000rpm. This should fly even better with less lifting capabilities. Will report back when I get her ready for flight. Just need some work to pay for the blades and servos and I'm good to go
