Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > What gyro for when it's time to "upgrade"?

First let me say that I started this hobby back in the days of mechanical gyros. I have watched the progression to piezo technology, and now Futaba's new system, and have gotten to play with more than a few different gyros along the way. Currently, I'm using a JR 900, and had a Futaba 301 in my Baron 30 (both of which are now for sale). These are relatively recent piezo gyros, non heading hold, that work quite well. But I guess I'm getting lazy in my old age, because I'm tired of having to constantly tweak my tail rotor pitch curves. I do have a CSM 360 HH (also for sale), so I'm familiar with heading hold gyros and how they perform.

I'm trying to decide between the Futaba 401 and the JR 460T as replacements. These are comparable in cost and features, except that the 460T is not mode switchable at the transmitter. No big deal, I plan to keep it in HH mode anyway.

Anyway, I have already gathered quite a bit of info on each and have formed some opinions. But I would like to hear what others think.

Have at it... keeping in mind that the topic is reasonably-priced sport gyros with heading hold.

gyro

Hi,
Even though I ,use JR radios, I have to give the nod to the 401. Steady as a rock in any temp. I fly in colder weather. If you don't mind not swithing at the transmitter, there is the 240.

Buy Gy401

I fly JR 10X and have tried their gyros. I finally swithced to a Gy401.

It can't be beat. You can buy it on line at www.helihut.com for $210 delivered.

Good luck!

Steve,
I switched from CSM 540 with JR8700 to a (older) 501 With JR8700 and I have not looked back since. I have a JR900 on my SRII and am switching that over to a 401 combo, both my raptors have 401 combos on them now. I have a JR400, A CSM540, A Telebee, and several of the GWS piezos sitting the shelf at home.
If you factor in the cost of the GY240 compared to the JR460T would it still be close? If you are going to fly in HH anyway the GY240 might work and be cheaper. I have not had any experience with the GY240 but I am very happy with the 401 and 501. FWIW

UM......401

Steve,

I have 3 401's and they are all good Gyro's. If you do do a 401 make sure you get the 9253 digital servo to go with it. This combination is very good. This combination goes for $200 at CyberHeli and Helihut. I have to admit I did buy one from a state side store so I could get warranty paperwork to match it. I'm glad I did too. I had a 401 go south on me and sent it in to Futaba. They are replacing it free of charge. Now all my 401's look identical to eachother and I can't remember which one I bought in the states and which I bought from Hong Kong.

Now, for a considerable amount more...($350 W/Servo from CyberHeli) the 601 is the top of the top. It's designed to use the 9251 digital servo. Folks say if you want the very best get the 601. I plan on getting a 601 for my next machine. I know Mark Ryder recently did the same thing. He was looking for a new Gyro to replace his JR 5000t and 8700 combo. He settled on the 601 too.
http://runryder.com/showtopic.htm?s...7&highlight=601 Look at marks quote near the last post. It says it all.

Gyro

I have a 401 + 9253 on my Freya it holds just fine. However once you try a 601 +9251 (which I have as well) you will actually think that the 401 won't hold if you punch the helicopter with an OS 91 engine.

However, purchasing 1 601 with 9251 combo will alow you to buy 2 of the 401's. If you have the money get the 601, but if not the 401 is still a great gyro.

I have recently switched out of all my JR 550T and 5000T's even though I use a 10X radio.

Steve- Try "that" gyro again??

Steve maybe you could try that gyro that killed your Mystar46 when the plastic wrapping came off during testing;-) Was it a "ACT" gyro? As a previous mystar owner I "felt " your pain;-)
I would go with the 401 for simplicity or the 502 if you want to tinker a litlle, the 601 is great but you won't notice that much difference between the 502 and the 601, it just isn't worth it to most sport flyers.

Vance,

Actually, it was a MyStar 30, but you're right about the ACT gyro. Man, I was P.O.'ed. But I ended up getting the last laugh out of that deal.

Thanks to all who responded. Here's what I have found;

There is no contest between the Futaba 401 and JR 460T. Just about everyone I've talked to with a 401 sings it's praises. And just about everyone I've talked to with the JR 460T has issues with it.

It would appear that the 401 is happiest with a digital servo. The gyro will work with a non-digital, but some occasional hunting may occur. This comes from the horse's mouth, Steve Helms. So it will be the 401/9253 combo for me.

Volkul and Hirobonut, I hear you re the 601, but since I don't really need the extra holding power, etc., I just can't see spending the price of a plastic 30 kit on a gyro/servo.

Anyway, I will still be using the JR 900 and Futaba 301 for a while yet. But both will be replaced with a 401/9253 combo. If one of you guys will buy my Baron, I'll get one right away...

The 401 with 9253 is the best low cost bet but if you can shell out the extra $ get the 601 with the 9251 combo. Unlike the 401 you can adjust it anyway you want.

Definitely the 401

Currently using one on a Freya with a 9253. Cheap as chips and works really well.

Hey Steve here is a link to a friends web page http://members.home.com/rgayle/ on there is a couple small reviews on the 401 and 601 from fuaba. This guy is (was) a die hard JR guy (4 5000t) in his helis and is now running two 601's and and a 401 that replaced another 5000T. He goes into how to run the gyros off a 10x (10sxll) Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, Chris. I'm definitely going to get the 401/9253 combo, so I'll be interested to read what he has to say about using it with the PCM 10 radio.
