Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > FUTABA BLS-451 SERVO'S- GOOD OR BAD

For some of you that refuse to believe the BLS451s are ok to use in a helicopter even after Futaba tells you its ok...

I have been running the BLS451s on cyclic along with the BLS251/Spartan DS760 on my Logo 500 3D for about 80 flights and have had no trouble with them. The cyclic servos are running at 6V using the CC BEC for power and there has been no glitching that I have seen - in flight or on the bench. Currently I'm running them on a PCM JR R790 rx but will be switching over the an AR7000 this weekend.

These were ordered/installed back in November 2007. Sure there can be isolated cases of bad servos but its not all of them.

Regarding the RX current, Futaba says 8 amps continuous, 10 amps peak. If the peaks are short and the RX is feed from two (or more) R/C connectors, 10 amps is probably conservative. I agree with John; a single R/C connector is far more limiting. I've been using two R/C connectors feeding the RX to split the load for quite a while.

Ace Dude, I remember measuring about 8 amp peaks (Fluke 187 on fast min/max) while stirring the sticks (quickly reversing the servo's motors) with four 9252 plus one 9256 on the ground. With a scope across the current shunt of the Fluke meter, the duration was fairly short (about three milliseconds). Despite the high current, the peak low voltage (measured with VoltMagic) is great: 4.6 volts (4-cell 1950FAUP battery, custom switch with twin leads to the RX and power pole connectors to the battery), and the peak low voltage is about the same whether stirring the sticks on the ground or flying. The relatively good voltage actually raises the amps (and servo speed). On the other hand, with a lesser 4-cell pack and switch, the peak low voltage was off scale at less then 3.4 volts (on the ground), peak current is likely reduced proportionally.

Wyn,

Thanks for the input, although I believe Futaba's FAQ reference is fundamentally flawed in both question and answer. The receiver doesn't draw squat! The servo motors are the current draw.

However, I think you confirmed my point that any BLS-451 problems are likley caused by poor power systems.

I also recommend anyone using 451's, 8717's or any other high power servos to use at least 2 battery connections to the receiver as a minimum. And use high quality Sub C batteries or lipo if using a direct pack. If using a regulator, make sure it has two outputs to the receiver or use a product like the ReactorX.

I think I will test Futaba's FAQ claim of 8 amps contiuous through the power bus of one of their receivers. Anyone care to sacrifice a receiver for science?

rexxigpilot, I read the answer as 8 Amps in the BAT slot and 8 Amps out anywhere else. I am glad you are going to test this and not just take the answer as an unqualified fact.

The cell Wyn is using, HR-4/5FAUP, is a sub A (well 4/5 A) cell with very low impedence.

Anyone running the BLS servos at higher than 6 volts or even unregulated?

Have about 8 flights on mine so far and absolutely no problems. Wouldn't really say they are worlds different than the S9252's they replaced in my R90. But they do center better, and ofcourse they are faster.

My Specs.

R90
BLS451's cyclic and collective
BLS251 Rudder
Spartan DS760
Fromeco 4800 Lion
Arizona Heli Reg.
Running 5.8V to everything.

I love these servos. I have been running them on my Trex 600N for months and they work awsome. I just bought a set for my Synergy. They do center better than any other servo i have had before (9451s 9252s) They are fast and have the torque. I am not saying they are better than the 8717s, i just have not tried them yet. If you are thinking of getting new servos, you can not go wrong with the BLS451s.

Hey, rexxigpilot, did you ever test the 8 Amp buss ?

Four Stroker,

I haven't tested yet but I still plan to do so. I'll post after I do. I think the amp rating of many receivers is like the C rating of most LiPo's - overrated!
