e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > 12s balancer

Does anybody know of a 12s balancer that can be connected independent of charger and is not effected by charge current?

I am charging 12s2p A123 on a power supply and would like to leave a balancer connected to the balance tabs during the process. Charge current will be 20amps.

I can balance the pack at the moment by breaking it down into two 6s sections and using a 210 balancer but now each 6s half will not be balanced to the other. This over time could lead to a larger imbalance. Im afraid the 6s balancing could when the pack is connected as 12s contribute to imbalance rather than get rid of it and do more harm than good.

Anyone any ideas?

I had looked at that but it seems to be a charge through balancer. Would it handle 20amps !!

Can it be used without passing the charge current through it?

Good stuff thanks for the reply. Are my concerns correct about balancing in two 6s sections as I have been? Is there a cheaper option!! ?

Check the bantam PB-6, each is 6S, they can be wired together to balance 12S. The duo can be connected to the 902 charger for voltage monitoring of each cells by the charger.

Thanks hugo,

I will take a look at that option. I have two 210 balancers and two 1010c's already and had been setting them to work on each half of the 12s pack by having a connection mid way in the pack to break it down to two 6s packs. This works well but since I got the Mastech powersupply to fast charge the packs in 15mins I was trying to find a better balancing option.

One thing I am considering is if I made up a wiring harness to connect the two 6s sections in parallel through the balance tabs. Connect pin1 of the balance tab on one 6s section with pin 1 of the tab on the other 6s half and did the same for all seven active pins in the tabs with the normal tabs on the other end then I could balance the pack as one 6s4p pack with one 210 balancer. Instead of the usual 12s2p I have at the moment. I would still not be able to balance while charging though as I would have to leave the main wires unplugged i.e pack left as two 6s2p sections.

Would this work? Its not ideal as I would prefer the balancer on the pack while charging

This will work.
Can you wire main lead in parallel too? You could simply charge/balance as 6S4P and discharge as 12S2P.

Yes I could do that with the main leads alright but am trying to avoid that route. It would mean the Mastech delivering 20amps would take twice as long to charge the pack. 30 mins instead of 15.

Thanks for the reply on the balancer.

As per Hugos suggestion I went with two PB6 balancers. Alot cheaper than the schulze. Just waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks guys
