stripped again

Yesterday i spoke to a helidirect rep about buying a good slow starting ESC .His suggestion was castle creations esc as being the best at $ 135 and i agree but it is too much money for me .I paid $130 for the heli ..So i worked on my bp60 esc $35 and after changing some of the setting i got it to work very well .Spooled up a few times , no problem at all .This was me not thinking but from 50% engine on normal , i hit the 3d switch .That brought the motor up to 80% real fast and stripped the main gear again .That was with the 15 tooth pinion ..Gear strips too easy and i do not care what anyone says . Does anyone make an other main gear that will fit this think ?

i ordered a sonix 60 to try out but now i think the slow start problem is ok . Thanks for getting back to me .
Any feedback on gears stripping will be appreciated

Surely when you change to 3D mode the switch point should not cause a great change in motor speed. It should be at the hover point and both curves should be close at that point.

ESC Sonix

OK Today i tried the sonix ESC .It has the very slow start setting that the BP60 esc does not and With that setting it starts very slow. The bad thing is that i could not use it with a Six cell setup It only goes up to 5 cells .The other thing is it is running hot ,hotter than the BP60.By the way the BP 60 esc heat sink is three times the size of the Sonix 60 .How many sonix 60 are there ? maby i got the wrong one .I got mine from CNChelicopter.com who by the way are also very good ,so far i have ordered 4 times from them all ways have stock and get it in three days.

Mine is a 60A-opto. From what I gather from the paper work is for 2-6S but the model with BEC is only 2-5S.
Mine does not get hot so I am assuming you have a BEC version and its the BEC thats generating the heat

esc

Clive45 hi
This is the link for the ESC http://www.cnchelicopter.com/servle...8HDX-%29/Detail
.It comes with an external bec pre wired .I think the ESC is a 2 to 6 cell but the BEC has 2 to 5 cell or 22 volt on it for specs .I guess it might make the 6 cells .I tried to email xmhobbies but the email they have on their web page is no good .i will call tomorrow .
Thanks again

crash

Last week i had two crashes .First one ,i was hovering on a first flight on a new 6 cell setup 2 feet high when i had no control .I watched the heli nose in slowly and hit the ground .Two days later got it fixed installed a new receiver and a different ESC , went out and tried it 5 minutes in to the flight lost roll control and went .This time i had two stripped servos along with blades and some head parts .On both cases i lost radio coms . ????? this time i will try a other motor with new servos and see .Any idias ??????

what radio system are you using and did you do a 360 deg radio check with/without motor running?

Hello again
Radio checked out good before and after the crashes .During the rebuild i found some bind in the main blade holders.I found that the 1 mm collars between the bearings and the thrust bearing were missing on both sides ..Did not know if this was a factory modification or it was just missing so i took the other heli apart to check and this one has the collars installed .Also one of the thrust bearings was in backwards ( large ID was on the outside ).So much for QC .

flys again

Got it back together and went out to test it today. Had a bad vibration on take off and got a little better after it reached hover but was still shaking .Went home , checked the head and blade balance ,was good .Removed the main shaft and spindle , mount them on a drill to check for out of round and was fine .Replaced the MAIN GEAR and problem is gone .Today i used the stock motor the one with the heat sink three futaba 3004 servos and the same receiver i used when it crashed .Replaced missing 1mm ring spacers in grippers and had no problems with the radio at all .So it is back flying again . An other think i forgot to mention is all the setscrews on the heli got stripped , in were the wrench fits .Can only use these once or twice .They are very soft and bad quality and the wrench does not fit in them good .I replaced all of them .I just started having the same problem with some of the screws.
I thing re routing all the wires and keeping them on one side of the heli helped with the radio problem .Do not have any wires cross from one side of the frame to the other .

thanx for the posts, its good info as im just starting with hdx 500.
I know the feeling about helis crashing by themselves, I had a bad servo in my nitro that cost me 2 crashes and 2 lots of 150 bucks in as many days to figure out I needed a new servo, then on the third day was going great until my tail push rod broke, crashed and stripped my new servo to shreads, now need anoth 150 dollars to fix the heli and a new servo, ive put that heli to rest for a while and will just buy more packs for my little electric I think, so far it seems to keep going longer than what the bigger notros seem to do, touch wood.

Im very interested about whats on the trex 500 and also batteries, e.t.c, that could be used also on hdx 500, thinking maybe not waste too much money on 4s packs, if 6s are cross compatible.

Even us oldies can Heli. Chris. Perth Australia

I have 10 x3 cell lipos and only one 4 cell .I tried all different setups The 3s with a 24 pinion and stock motor needed a little more power but for a beginners should be ok and it is good on 15 C and 20 c bats .With the 26 pinion is good for all around sport flying and still not bad on the bats .On 6 cels and stock 850 kv motor you have to use a small pinion .You will need a ESC that starts very slow or you will go through main gears like crazy .I flew the 6s ,the 850 kv motor and a 15 pinion and 20 C bats and everything got hot more so the bats.I was happy with the 13 tooth pinion all around .Also i found to be able to get better head speeds with the yellow fiberglass blades for some reason .I was able to get faster cyclic response by changing the flybar and paddles with the ones from trex500 .It is now pretty quick and only spinning at 2100 and easy on the bats .A lot of power , high head rpm for a 3d setup with reasonable flying times is not what i am talking about here and i will not spend more money on bats that i spent on the whole helicopter .

correction

I want to make a correction .The 1 mm rings that are in the manual are not on ether of my hdx500 .When i installed them the spindle was too short ,that made me re check the other hdx500 .None in there ether .Replaced the spindle ,GREASED the thrush rearing and the bind went away .Replaced the broken servo gears .Have not flown it yet after i repaired it

Scorpion HK-3026 1000KV

Today i tried my new Scorpion HK-3026 1000KV i got from helidirect .I tried it on my 3 cell setup with two 2200 25c bats 22 tooth pinion again for sport setup about 2100 to 2200 head speed .It ran good and smooth with good power but no big difference from the stock motor if any .From what i reed in the forums i guess i was expecting more .I will try it on 6 cells soon to see what the deal is .On the three cell setup 60A esc ,bats ware just warm ,esc was cold and motor somewhat hot to the touch Flew good but at 11 +- pitch it slows down some at full stick.

6s

Flew the 6 cells on the scorpion and still not a lot of difference from the stock motor to me .Maybe the 3d guys find a difference on their setups at higher head speeds. I found none .Flew both helis with the only difference between them was the motor .Also i found out that heli direct will have the new frames for the hdx500 SAH and the new 140 tooth gears i a few weeks. Not sure about the SAS yet
