e-HeliDirect Outrage - HDX 300-600 > hdx500 SAS standard servo setup

Hi guys
I just got two hdx500 SAS for standard servos.I like to know what you SAS owners have done to the front , elevator servo that is , to get it to give you 10 to 11 deg of pitch and not hit either the frame spacer on the bottom servo travel and the anti-rotation bracket on top on the up travel . .I have moved the frame spacer forward to one of the bottom servo holes , over the pinion gear and i can get 11 deg of pitch with no binding going down but now the servo arm hits the anti-rotation bracket on top. Also had to use the bottom hole on the main shaft and re adjust all the head rods to get the
11 deg .I will try to use longer servo arms and reduce the throw / arm movement to see what i can end up with.
Now lets see what you have done
Thanks

longer servo arms

OK
I used the dubro servo arms at the 5th hole out on everything and cut all servo travel to 75% .Now i get + 11 and - 11 no bind .Also noticed in the assembly manual the frame spacer on the bottom i was having problems with is been removed ,not there .
So now to my next Q .Where does the body mount pins attach to .Can not find that in the manual either.

landing gear , tail fin , canopy ?

This has been a one man show so far .I guess nobody owns these .Anyways
i now have a new problem .I do not think this canopy can be used with standard size servos .The elevator servo in the front right side is sticking out too far and throws the body off to one side .It can not be
centered .Needs a wider body to clear the servo .Also the tail fin is taller than the landing gear and it looks kind of funny sitting on the floor with the tail up and the fin all bent to the side .I did not have any of these kind of problems building any of my other helis .I wander if there is a low profile servo i can use ? So where do the body mounts go ??

canopy ok now

To get the body to fit better and not hit the elevator servo ,I had to install the servo from the inside of the frame .To do that i would have to take the side frame off , too much work .
Now i hear some guys use 6 cell lipos ,but 94 tooth gear does not come in contact with a 15 tooth pinion unless the motor mount slots are enlarged to get the pinion closer to main gear .Is that what you do ?
Where do the body mounts go ?

Here are some pics .Also i just thought of a way to install the elevator servo on the inside of the frame .Take the top of the servo off , turn the heli on the side inset the top of the servo inside the frame and put the servo together from the outside and done ,no need to cut the frame .

I wish I could help, I have a SE, the motor mount, mounting holes are slotted on the SE for backlash adjustments, I am running an Axi 1200kv with a Protek 5S 20C 4000mAh and a 12t pinion. I had to file the two front threaded mounts on the motor bracket to get the motor far enough forward to mesh. I would slot the holes, otherwise you will have to use a larger pinion and cut back on the throttle percentages to keep it around 2600rpm

3 cell and 6 cell lipo

So somebody is reading this .
OK thanks for the first comeback .I know it is all about - watts - when it comes to power consumption .Weather is 11 volts and 35 amps or 14 volts and 25 amps etc so there should not be much difference in flying times but there has to be some difference in performance .Also pulling less amps from the batteries may be better for them even though the watts are still high .I was thinking to elongate the slots on the frame that the motor mount slides in but i hear there is a new larger main gear of 130 teeth coming out soon so i will hold off for now weather it will fit the sas frames is an other story.Since i have bats i used on the trex 450 i can only do 3 cell or 6 cell combos .I wander how it will do on 3 cells and 24 tooth pinion .I got an esc that works on 4 to 8 cells .I have ordered an other ESC for 2 to 7 cell so i can use the 3 cell combo for now .I will probably need a higher rpm motor or a larger pinion if there is one, to get 2600 rpm head speed .Does anyone sell a larger pinion like 26 tooth ?
Thanks again

not bad

OK
Today i setup the esc and went out and tried it .Took only one set of bats two tree cell in parallel 11 volt 24 tooth
pinion, Got the gyro dialed in and throttle curves at 25 60 70 100 just to hover pitch 25 60 70 90 _4 deg and + 9 .By
the time i set everything up i only had power to fly around a fewtimes .It felt very stable and plenty responsive for
my kind of flying..it goes need more power and i think with 4 cell setup or 6 cell it will be perfect for me / All the
guys i have flown helis with in the last 5 years want to fly 3D but so far nobody does real 3D but all have these crazy
money 3D machines to do rolls flips and loops that can be done with any of todays helicopter on the market . I was able
to get + 14 and - 12 with no bind so i think with + - 11 deg and a 4 or 6 cell setup it will be great .So now if i new
when the 130 tooth main gear is coming out i can setup the other hdx500 sas i have still in the box .The weather is going to be good again tomorrow here in Mass so i will take a few more flight .
When is the new main gears coming out ??????????????????????????????

more flights. Where are the new main gears ?

Today i took two full flights that went very good with motor curve at 100 - 90 - 80 - 90 - 100 and 11 deg pitch and still 11 volts Only one problem came up after a few hard upright and inverted pull ups the head got some unusual vibration and blade tracking went out some .I will lube the o-ring dampers and try again tomorrow Also it needed no trim on the swash just rudder and gyro setup and curves adjusted .It came out at 3 3/4 pounds with 4 standard servos the yellow canopy and two 2200 20 c 3 cell bats .For 3D it will need more power for sure but for sport flying it is just fine .On these Chinese inexpensive batteries i got 8 to 9 minutes of mixed flying . Bats re -charged at 2000 ma and it took 45 minutes to peak .Not bad .
So when is the new main gears coming out ?

some more head speed

After lubricating the rubber dumpers with some Teflon grease , replaced the motor with a KDA36-08XL 1000 kv and went out and toot 2 more flights .This time it had more power and was very responsive to sticks movement and quick reversing direction .Same curves i had before . Tail needs more speed .Ordered the speed up tail gear 13 tooth .So this one is all set for a 3 cell setup and it will stay like this .My second hdx500 sas will be done differently .
Where is the new main gear ?

Two more flights today went very well .No binding or funny noises and solid control .Tail speed gear is needed , to center the tail pitch where it should be ( center that is ) and to have equal movement left and right on the tail blades .Feels very longly out here a.Thanks to the only reply .Looks like there is no need to post here any more since there is no help .Consider this post closed .Hope someone finds this info help full .
And last i wanted to say that Helidirect is a great place to deal with

Happy flying

Where is the new main gear ??????????

im reading the progress on your heli as well and running with a 6S2P setup. im also waiting for a main gear upgrade but so far the stock 94T main gear is serving my purposes.

i do however agree with your tail assessment.

going good

I had now 15 flight in with the #1 hdx500 and just 2 flihgts with #2 .Have made a few small changes like trex landing gear ( taller and stronger )fly bars and paddles and trex tail hub and blades .Still fly it with 3 cells 25C bats .Motor does 1000KV with a 24 tooth gear .#2 has the hdx500 motor 850 KV on 4 cell bats 3500 ma ,has more power than #1 but only 6 minutes.I get 9 minutes on #1with the 3 cells 2250 ma.Both have the 13 tooth tail gear .Tail holds good .So far no problems .I still like the flying time and power i get from my nitro helis a lot better but also like variety .
Thanks for the response .

6 cells

Today i tried the 6 cells with a 12 tooth pinion from trex 500 .Stripped the main gear on the first spool up to shreds .Came home changed main gear and pinion to a 14 tooth .Went out and stripped the main gear bold to the bone .My conclusion is i have to use the bigger pinions and cut the power curves down Other words compromise for something the heli is not designed to do .So three cell gives not much power , 6 cell i can not use and if the bigger gear ever comes out will have to change the frames too $$$$$$$ so i can not do a perfect setup with all the 3 cells i have ( 8 of them ) and i do not want to spend more money for 4 cells bats .Not that flexible on setups this heli is .Trex 500 keeps hovering on my mind and that how it starts

It should not matter what battery setup or pinion you use if you use the slow start in your esc and a very shallow throttle curve in the first part of it. I'm only using 3S but my blades start very very slowly like 1 rpm/sec.

gears

My esc does not start that slow even when slow start is set .Have to try some of the other esc settings .But i know that a small main gear and a small pinion have only one to two teeth coming in contact so it i easy to strip

I'm only using the esc that came with the plastic kit and I must admit that it has super slow start on it. It's a Sonix 60A seems to work very well. It will allow the heli to sit there with the blades just turning around slowly. I can see your point about small pinions and not many teeth and a hard start. Maybe try spinning the blades by hand at the head and then try your start, it might just take the load off enough.
Any how good luck I have yet to try something above 3S. I will change the frames and main gear when they come out and I might just use the old ones for a plastic kick around/spare

Cheers

slow start esc

I may try one of these esc to see if it is better on my setup .On my other HDX that i use a KDA motor it starts a lot slower But with the HDX motor with the heat sink it starts to spin at about 25% throttle and not slow .I will try timing at 7 deg and PWM at 16 khz and see .Now it set at timing = 1 deg and PWM at 8 khz .Also with 6 sells we have 22 volt so i guess volts come in faster to stick movement ( you know 0 to 11 volts on three cells and 0 to 22 volts for 6 cells , for full stick range ) The esc i am using now is a low cost 60 amp from bphobbies the BP 60A Brushless ESC .It is very good except the slow start .I have used it on planes and it was perfect .
Talk to you latter
Thanks

If you get this can you please check , what is your ESC brand .I was told the hobbywing 60 is the one that comes with the plastic kit and it does not start very smooth . Is it the hobbywing or the Sonix 60A ESC
Thanks

Hi, mine is the sonix, it has to be the smoothest esc start I have had especially for a cheap one.my throttle curve in normal is 0.10.80.100.100 and I can just push the stick to half throttle and it spools up like a real heli, no snatch just very smooth.
