Bergen R/C Helicopters > Blade tracking for High Lift Industrial Twin

Does anyone else out there have a high lift kit for a bergen industrial twin I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting this thing to track right. Its set up with 2 rubber dampers and two .015 inch washer to keep it as stiff as possible. The chopper tracks fine at take off but continually comes in and out of track as try to gain altitude. Thing thing that concerns me is that the blade grips can still be deflected by hand if you push the blades toward the ground and I have the blade grips tighted as far as they will go. I have inspected the ball links and can find a point where they would flex or come lose. I will try to replace them but does anyone else have suggestions?

Do you have the .040 washer AND the 2 ea .015 washers?

What exactly are you seeing when the blades go out of track? Is the heli wobbling or some other type of reaction?

I have the .015 washers in, so basically the standard set up of the industrial twin head. I will add the .040 washers but do you think that will help if the blade grips themselves keep are able to flex up and down when I push down or up on a blade.
Now as far as the tracking, it looks great in the initial takeoff and when I get just a few feet off the ground it will start to go in and out of track.

The required setup is to have the .040 washers and whatever else you choose to have, ie; adding in the .008 and or the .015 shims.

IOW you HAVE TO HAVE the .040 washers in place. Then add any shims to adjust your dampening feel.

If you don't have these washers anymore or need new ones anyway, give me a call at 269-445-2060, I'll get some right out to you, NC.

An additional thought also is to check the head axle, ensuring it is not bent. With a heavy helicopter, we have found that by carrying it by one blade grip can bend the head axle. I'm talking 35Lbs or more total weight.

The best way is carrying it by the landing gear, stabilizing it with a hand on the head.

To check the head axle, remove one blade, use the 4mm allen wrench and spin the blade grip retaining bolt which in turn spins the head axle. Watch the blade grips for any up an down movement while spinning the head axle.

I have had this same problem from time to time. I noticed it became more of an issue when I bumped up to 850mm blades. What I have come to realize is, with these larger rotor diameters, there is considerably more twisting force feeding back through the linkage (compared to sport models). This becomes worse obviously at higher blade angles.

What this means is any linkage, swashplate or lever play, all the way back to the cyclic servos, that is more or less on one side (blade) verses the other will throw the blades out of track. It is all connected after all!

Spend some time getting rid of all free-play in your linkage. Hold the flybar in one hand and try to twist each blade separately and compare. Do this in the for-aft and side to side directions. If the free play is all gone or at least equal, your tracking problem will go away. That is unless you have another problem such as one blade grip much tighter than the other, a bad thrust bearing or paddles not aligned, bent axle and so on and so on ad infinitum.

As an update, we did figure out they only had the 2 .015 shims in place.

We sent them a new complete set of shims, new one piece dampeners, and a new head axle, just in case.

I have not heard yet if this has cured the tracking problem.

Success

Well after a couple of weeks of work we now have a high lift bergen. Thanks for helping me sort out the issues Chris. It turns out that we were seeing a ground resonance and since the landing gear wasn't damped we were able to hit a natural frequency of the helicopter landing gear system which is what caused the heli to shake itself apart. It is now on a healthy regime of 18lb+ payload flights.
