I've been searching for a close topic, or answers and while I've found some great info, seemed time to actually ask for input here.

Looking for feedback on my current planned setup:

Pantera 50
O.S. OS .70SZH
9252 on cyclic
GY401 w/ 9254 on tail

Background:

I'm in Boulder, CO (a bit higher altitude than Denver)
I taught myself to fly (decent hover, basic forward flying around) a Hirobo shuttle with Futaba TX6A in '93, learned some bad habits doing it! Been flying an Axe CP, some with an X400(not so happy with the TX6A) and lots of time into G3.5 on various helis.

Everything I've read online about the Tiger/Pantera and especially from and about John B has me convinced its definitely the way to go, I was looking at a raptor and kinetic before I learned about the pantera.

so, decent setup? thought I should step up the power flying here in Boulder, wondering about blade length, maybe going a little longer for the thinner air. Thinking it's going to be so much more stable I should jump at carbon blades right away. Should I squeeze all the power I can with a good pipe, or is it not going to be a noticeable gain for the price? Sadly, I've recently blown what little RC buget I have on two deals I couldn't pass up; LST2 and V24 so it's going to be a little slow getting everything together. anyway, feedback appreciated.

p.s. - for those suggesting I sell the lst/v24 to get a heli, I have a list of VW/Audi performance parts I gotta sell first, from when I stopped RC to race!(fun, not as rewarding) ;-P

well you should have tons of power... my only suggestion would be if your not yet flying around alot to put a o.s. 61 instead of a 70 so you can save a little on gas and get more time in the air... but down here in texas we don't have altitude problems so a 70 might be better. if you want carbon fiber blades right off i would suggest the maverikk g4s because their still good blades but almost half the price of other cf blades

This last summer I was in Denver every other weekend. I managed to hook up with a few chopper pilots at the LHS. I had the same questions you have. I learned that a nice set of carbon mains. Run 30% with a tuned pipe. All are very happy flying 3D.
I'm flying at 2100 feet all the time and when I get to sea level I have to say the Pantera's and Tigers jump to life.
I love flying in the winter here as the air density is huge. It should be the same for you.

The 70 with 620 will be the way to go. I'm having some issues with the manufacture of the engine nuts, which as soon as it's resolved means we'll begin offering the stage 1 kits. You're going to love this!

much thanks for the input! John - exactly the feedback I was hoping for, engine + blade length. Dang, if I still had my 240z parts I'd see if I could trade you for a pantera kit today. *grin*

Just pressed the 'go' button on a radio to replace the T6XA... (burned a hole clean through my credit card on that one) if I can get ends to meet, maybe I'll be ready to order the kit and engine about the time the stage1 kit is avail.

so far I've scraped together the following for the Pantera:

My next concerns are finding a muffler and deciding on cyclic servos. I'm surprised I can't find more muffler comparison conversations around the OS 70, seems a popular engine. It's a conundrum.

I stopped by the flying field today that I learned to fly at 25 some odd years ago (Boulder). I've been flying electric helis/planes lately (closest club field to me is electric only, joined that recently)and boy have I missed the sound of a nitro engine!

-BillM, what pipe would you suggest?

i would go with the 9451s for cycle... good servos with metal gears... mine are fast and im only running them at 4.8v

Well, just pulled the trigger on the kit, so we're up to the following ready to go (as soon as the order arrives):

Pantera 50
OS .70
Hatori Pipe
HS 5625 for Cyclic
R921 RX

and we're only missing:
GY401+9254
BBC

We'll see how long I can hold out for the BBC to be ready, vs attempting my own. I can see changing out the servos at some point, but I think those will be good to start. I had a couple I'd picked up recently, can't even remember why. Figured I'd only have to invest in one more to have a set for the Pantera.

I have an itchy trigger finger for that gyro combo at Heliproz......

The OS70 is probably a good choice for that altitude. I think you'll want 620mm blades too.

Shuttle ZX vs Pantera

High altitude Pantera build update:

Taking things slow because of fitting the .70
My brother insisted I start the conversion, so I re-read some conversion threads, looked over what I had and decided to go ahead and start the effort. We've put the fan hub on his lathe and machined it for the output shaft. I have several nuts on order to machine, and I've started the engine rebuild (bought a .70 used - needed new bearings). Mount still to be started.

I still need to balance the blades/head, but I do have my blades. (my first carbon blades, ooooooooh shiny!) I plan on doing my first few flights with 600 wood blades till I get the feel and just for some piece of mind, then I'll swap in the 620 Mavrikk carbons. Servo's are in, gyro is in. Reg and battery are in route. That Hatori pipe is going to need some figuring to get along with the canopy. Hopefully I can come up with something more classy than a sharp X-acto. (or at least artful wielding of the X-acto. Debating on painting the canopy. Can I succeed where others have failed? *shrug* I have a few ideas.

Now I'm wondering if I should pull the guts from my Shuttle and just get another Pantera?!?! Wondered if a I'd be happy with a 50 after I get the 70 flying? The biggest reason I think of this is I'm really amazed how little fuel I'm going through flying the Shuttle, so I'm tempted to just 'upgrade' it to a .50 in another Pantera. I guess I should pay off my credit cards I used for the Pantera before I jump, so I have some time.....

Just for fun. I know it would be a bit of bench time.
Fly the pantera stock with a hyper and stock woodies.
Then upgrade to the larger motor. The electronics would stay the same so your upgrade would be nill.
I'm still working on a bird that could fly at your MSL. Your reports would be grand and save me some engineering.

ordered hyper 50 and a pro pipe today. I'll see if I can't take it out next weekend and break in the engine. The rebuilt .70 will hang out on the shelf until the BBC from Audacity is done. I spent some time working an engine mount but didn't find aluminum locally in the time I had to look.

took the time to open it up, throw the hub on, line up the engine mount, set the Audacity pro muffler next to it, drool on all the shiny pieces....

A few more hours of fitment, run-out, and assembly and I'll be ready to start breaking in/maiden my Pantera FINALLY!!!

why do I freakin' have to work today?!?!? I have a heli begging to be finished. (Ironically I just made some adjustments to my Shuttle this week and I'm dying to see how it runs too)

Rule of thumb...your down atleast 15% on engine power and another
???% on lift depending on the density altitude for that day. Shed weight, as much as possible.
The guys running electric Heli's say they seem uneffected by the altitude but the nitro powered heli's suffered.
I use to live in Denver and my Trex 450 seemed to fly the same as down here in Ft. Worth.
I use to haul cargo out of DIA and the airplanes always seemed to be dragging boat anchors on take-off.

Update

so, three tanks full through so far.
turns out I totally phyched myself out and built the linkages really mild, added expo, etc. let it intimidate me with size/effort/cost over my shuttle and MX400 and managed to panic it into some asphalt. A wind gust started drifting w/my elevator trim off and I added a wee bit much negative collective on the second tank. Since then I've had my MX400 flying complimented, rebuilt and reworked the linkages on the pantera, and had a very nice test/play hover for tank three today (and it was gusting 5-20mph again). I still need to adjust the linkages, but I'm over the mental block. Too bad it was so costly. *sigh*

So, I'll close the thread after I report on the .70 vs the .50 and 620mm vs 600mm vs 550mm (because I had a set)at 5600 feet, plus summer temps and dry air.

Managed to pick up kit number two locally for the .70, and I have a fiendish plan of kit number three and a set of A123 batteries on brushless. I'll start a build thread if I raise the funds with a pending sale and move on the e conversion. (because who really wants to do a trex600e when we could try a pantera e conversion?!?!)
