I am thinking of converting my Rap 90 SE.

It will be used for my second big vario wolf so it will be swinging 800mm blades flybarless.

I think I have all the motor specs and ratios figured out, but not how to attach the pinion.

How can I attach the stock 12 tooth pinion to an 8mm motor shaft?

Are people using a clutch like in the converted Benzin's?

Without getting a special adaptor built with an 8mm bore with set screws on one end and a threaded hole to match the pinion's threads on the other to screw the pinion into.

There is no one making such a part for sale as a standard item.

You can however possibly get a Module 1 pinion with an 8mm bore from SDP:

Then you'll have to put an extension shaft up trough the pinion in to the upper bearing. You should be able to get a bearing with the correct OD and ID to carry this 8mm shaft at the same place or if not from BOCA bearings:

Good luck

Cool.

Thanks.

They only have an aluminum alloy pinion in stock in 12 tooth.

I wonder if it will hold up to a set screw?

I've seen aluminum pinions used on ERaptors. You should be OK with it in scale heli. It's sure harder than the plastic main gear.

The Adaptors that used to be available for converting glow 50 Raptors to electric were aluminum.

When you get it all figured out and ready for the final install use plenty of loctite and it won't let go.

My E-Rap90 uses a 32-3 with 8mm shaft. Use a downsizing coupler from 8mm to 5mm, then use a 5mm start shaft for a V1 or order a shaft from SDPI at the same time (do not use Stainless steel the pinion will gall to it). Then use a 9T Eraptor pinion, it will fit the Raptor 90 gears. Then you can use a bearing with a 5mm center in the bearing block.

I was thinking about exactly this the other day.

What boom, driveshaft and headspeed will you be using please?

Can we have some more info on the motor, battery and ratio?

Decided it will not work without doing MAJOR mods.

To get the swash plate near the top of the fuse puts the boom at the top of the fuse's boom or maybe a little higher.

Since I had vario mechs sitting in the corner, I just modded them to be electric.

It can be done with a cable tail drive or by making a gear drive system to drop the tail. Like I said it was easier just to use the mechanics that the fuse was designed around.

Since it will be electric, I might make my own frames to mount all the servos and gyros in the mechanics. That way I could pull the whole unit out of the fuse a lot easier.
