WHIP IT GOOD OR NOT AT ALL

I run my whip ant. high in the canopy as far from anything as I can. However if you have to run it underneath her then put it where it won't get wet and away from the batteries. Also I think it helps to run all the servo wires on one side of the heli and the antenna on the other.

I run the whip on everything but the Fury, the Fury accomadates the full length very well.
I usually will take the whip stick it on and then use a piece of thick double sided tape to mount the tip of the whip through to isolate the vibration. I have yet to have one fail.

Revolution Whip

I use the revolution whips. I've mounted 1 to the front of the Raptor 30 on the LH side using an angle bracket. On my X-Cell's I've bolted the whips to the hole in the LH Gold canopy mount. I've noticed no Ill effects.

Winger

I don't use a whip. I follow the KISS theory. The wip is just one more part that has the potential for problems. Plus It shortens your range, granted it is negligible for most heli pilots.

The standard wire antenna is pretty basic, hard to screw up, and doesn't cost extra. You can "3D" them without fail. I will put up pictures of my freya and r30 as soon as I get a chance to show how I mount them if anyone is interested but I think its pretty much a standard method for those that don't like whips. I modify an extra cut off servo arm (that old plank trick) to act as a stop in front of the antenna tube and another to connect the end of the antenna to a rubber band which is then connected to the horizontal (30 size) or vertical (60 size) tail fin. In a crash, the stop will keep the antenna from pulling out of the RX. If it breaks at the stop, then you solder it back and use shrink tubing and your good as new. Just remember to inspect the rubber band to ensure it has not become brittle before each day of flying.

I like that method but CY has an even better one. He kinda has a plastic stick for an antenna tube that he just runs the antenna through an attaches at the end and doesn't rubber band anything. Looks neat and simple and has no drawbacks that I can think of on a 60 size machine.

Deans whip

A friend of mine just gave me a whip antennae. Unfortunately no instructions. What is the length of stock wire from the receiver to where you attatch the whip antennae lead? Where do you make the cut? Ron

usually around 4 inches from receiver. There is a range that you SHOULD be able to use.

I cut my antenna from 10 inch and mount the whip on the landing gear.
I have a good range check for this set up. You may consider if you think it works.

I agree but....

when it comes to whip antennas there is nothing more simple. They are base loaded and the range loss for a heli is not a factor. A jet maybe but not a heli.

What is complicated about cutting the wire, soldering the connection and mounting?

An antenna outside in the open on a model is a great opportunity to get snagged or torn in transport or unforunate landings.

Get a whip, keep it away from servos and engine and enjoy!!

Whip

FWIW: I've been using Dean's whip antennas for almost ten years in airplanes and helis. I've never ever had any kind of a problem with them. Of course, now that I said that, I'll have a problem tomorrow!!

Whip on Plank

FuryFlyer:

Yep, I use them on planes, too. Usually because I've taken an RX out of a helicopter to use in a plane. Since they already have a whip installed, I just use 'em the way they are. It actually looks very scale-like if you bend it back about 30 degrees

I currently have one on a scratch-built 80" Somethin' extra and a Hobbico TwinStar. I've also had one on a 1/4 scale Lanier Extra 300, Tiger Stick, a trainer, an EDF Kyosho F-16 and probably a few others that I can't remember. So far the only problem I ever had was on the trainer. I forgot to plug in the antenna and had an "event". I count that one as pilot error, though (improper pre-flight inspection). I've only done that once and always make it routine the check now.

Wip Antennas..!!!!!

I have to say that I been using wip antennas for years now, I have them in may helis, airplanes, including my jets, if some one here besides me fly jets and had been in Florida Jets, knows what I'm talking about, more then 60% of jet pilots use wip antennas on there jets including me, they work great!

Eat, Sleep, Fly 3D.....Catch me if you can!

"What is complicated about cutting the wire, soldering the connection and mounting? "

You mean compared to not doing that? You would need to crash the thing bad to hurt the antenna and if you use Youngblood's method or use a rubber band like I described, there are no problems in transport. I'm just saying why spend money for the sake of spending money. I also hate the idea of cutting my antenna wire. Don't listen to me, look at the world class pilots:

The little red streak is the tube the standard antenna is in. Sorry but the quality of the pic gets reduced after you post it.

Now you all want to be like Mike don't you? Yes I know I got pics of these guys using wips also, but thats beside the point.

Its whatever you want to do, but there is no rule that says a heli must have a wip.

Whips?

I haven't used them yet, but, I have several and I'm planning to use them exclusively on my helis.

At first I had concerns because nearly everyone said there would be a reduction in range-however, after realizing that what they meant was a reduction from 2 mi. to 1.5 mi. so, it just isn't an issue.

That distance is much farther than you would ever fly a heli-let alone see it,so it shouldn't be a problem.

the revolution whips work really well, but if I did some of the autos that CY does I'd probably go back to a wire..........
