Gentlemen:

I am getting ready to start my first scale heli. It is a Vario Bell 47 and will be assembled using the Benzine Trainer mechanics with the CCPM frames and the Zenoah engine. I have accumulated all the necessary parts for the project.

I am having some second thoughts about going directly to the scale fuselage without building it as a pod and boom first to work the bugs out. Plus, I have never flown the left hand rotor rotation except on my simulator (which wasn't a big deal).

Do any of you scale guys have any thoughts or recommendations on going directly with the scale fuselage or is doing the pod and boom first a good idea? You suggestions are appreciated!

HI Steve,

I'm not a scale flier (yet) but I do have a Vario Sky Fox. I was very concerned about the left hand rotation and how it affect the flight characteristics, but to honest, 30 seconds after the first take off I forgot all about it and it has not been a problem.

I wouldn't worry about it.

P&B or scale first

IF you take your time when you get the heli put together and start test flying it, it shouldnt be a problem. When you tare it apart to get it into the 47, you might have to adjust one thing or another anyway from the P&B to the 47. If you dont have the parts to make it a P&B, jsut stick it intot hte 47 and go for it. jsut take the test flight one small step at a time.
Its not like a Fused body where you have to check to see that hte fuse doent shake and is attatched right before you put all the scale stuff on it. with the 47 you have to have all on or it wont fly besides the canopy maybe. I havent done a 47 yet but you might as Dan StJohn. I know he has one!!

I would not worry about test flying the mech first. Build the 47 and paint it, and have a go, it will be a non-event. No more than testing the pod and boom.

Thanks for the input guys! I've had the parts for a couple of years and had temporarily lost interest in the project. But, it is becoming a priority again.

I don' t have the pod and boom parts so I would need to get them if I were to proceed in that direction. That's why I was interested in your opinions as to the need to do it.

Based on your comments I'll just go with the scale to start with. Thanks again!

Test fly

Joe is right, just build it to the specks and you won't even notice the left hand rotation, Until you fly the benzine you will here all kinds of advice. I have two of them and had the same concerns. After talking to Joe at East Coast he asssured me that the benzin was a breeze to fly. The man was right I bought my second Benzine from Joe and also got the Carbon airwolf that I am now building and after flying my first Benzin have no concerns in putting it into the fuse right off. I had all the same concerns as you and probably picked Joe's brain more than I should have, he never once sent me in the wrong direction. He is the man to get your Vario from as access to his expertise is a great help

Thanks for the input. It's good to have a recommendation like that about Joe!

I ordered all my parts from Daniel Grandmaison (Eastern Helicopters in Canada). Daniel had the parts shipped to me from California through air star since I am right next door.

Daniel was extremely helpful and a real pleasure to deal with. He helped me get all the parts I needed but also took the time to make sure that I didn't waste money buying parts that I didn't need! That is good honest service!


So far, everyone I've dealt with regarding Vario has been excellent people and I would hesitate to order from any of them!

I built mine as a scaler without doing the P&B first. It should not be a problem if you have some experiance flying. Check in often if you run into any problems.
