I propose that the 'Pirouetting Mobius' be added to Competitive 3D Set Moves.

I'd think it'll be hard enough without the piro.

That's the idea!

well in that case, why don't we do the torus as well? Or, if you're imaginative enough, the Klein Bottle?

I can see a torus being rendered as a pirouetting looping circuit, but I can't yet imagine what could be done with a Klein Bottle...

well, let's just use our imagination and call it a "non orientable manoeuvre of genus 1"!!! As you know all odd genus surfaces are hard to fit in 3d.

My son and I practice a maneuver we call "Piro Snake Fig 8" This is a technical maneuver in its form. This can be modified to satisfy mobeus loop by eliminating the 2nd circle.

1. Base is a fig 8 with one circle being upright and the other being inverted.

2. The transition from left circle to right is opposite to a normal fig 8 transition where you roll into the circle to go inverted from upright, instead of going from left bank to right bank as in a normal transition, hence the name snake.

3. The third step is the incorporation of piroutte to above 2 steps.

This maneuver works well within the guidelins of the mobeus loop as the tape represents the main rotor orientation.

As for the taurus, I can envision only upto taurus circle.

1. Base is a loop.
2. each loop does not end up where the loop is started to start the next loop at a displaced location.
3. Think of the trajectory of the heli as a string wrapped around a donut in a helical fashion or an inductor where the coil goes around the torroidal ferrite core.

Simpler version would replace individual loops with forward or backward flips where heli constantly orients inself to the center of the circle while moving sideways with a circular trajectory.

The ultimate diffiulty virsion would replace the individual loops with piro-loops.

Slight variation of the above is a known 3D masters maneuver "Piroutting Globe"

That's a heluva lot more than I can manage even on the sim.

Does Justin know what Mobius means?

Piroetting Mobius:- A simple pirouetting circuit with a pirouetting roll at the further most point so alternate circuits end up being skids in then skids out.

Taurus:- a barrel rolling circle, perhaps with a single piro on each roll just to make it more interesting in holding the shape.

Klein Bottle:- tricky to come up with something which maintains a similar visual representation but how about following the contour with a tight travelling pirouetting loop whose radii closes down thus forming a horizontal helix. When the radii is minimal, more or less piroflipping, move into a tight piro half loop to form the right hand part of the Klein. Follow through into the folded-in portion still maintaining the klein profile. As you get to the left hand side, wind out into a piro tight piro loop and you back at where you started.

Now it's time to give it a go on the sim

That bends my brain when I think about it. Hmmm... what to do... what to do...

Just tried the Klein Bottle (on the sim) and it nearly works although I couldn't keep my sh!t together in the transition into the right hand piro half loop from piroflipping bit where it necked in. I reckon it would work with some practice. From a visual aspect it's kind of recognisable cos of the vertical perspective; unlike other manouvers like the haymaker which is hard to get it to look coherent at the best of times. Not that I can do it, can't even get close

I've suddenly realised something.

What if we have a 10 - 20 second exposure time and capture a night flight with lights? I'm sure we can trace out a torus of mobius band. Klein bottle will require a bit of imagination to trace that out

Dood's gallery with night flying pictures will show you what I mean:

Dood, my immediate thought when seeing your pic was "wouldn't it be great if this feature could be employed on the Phoenix sim as a practice utility in night flight sceneries"

You have some great photos Dood, was that done on a digital camera? I take it you used a tripod?

Maybe we can have a competition to see who can produce an image of the shapes in question from the night photo capture technique?

I have to rule myself out, I'm not a good pilot and night flying actually scares me.

The camera was a pretty low-end Digital SLR, a Nikon D40x.
Yes, I used a tripod.

The sad part is, I bought the camera like 3 or 4 days earlier, and this was really the first day I brought it out and started playing with it.

I snapped about 200+ exposures, about a dozen of them came out looking decent. Its hard to get good night shots. It takes about 90% luck to get a good shot.

Those pictures are from a true novice.

Dood's 8 great night-time shots deserve a larger format posting.
