I dont believe the Trex is built well enough to cope with the 20cc motor.

Sorry to differ. I posted a durability thread here and on the freak and it seems the T-rex is doing very well over 200 flights, thank you very much.

This has got to be the best heli idea I have ever heard. I have been considering a gasser for some time, but the aerobatic limitations of the available helis are too great. I want one of these as my next heli. Thank you Copperclad for doing all of the hard work on this, we NEED you to succeed! I hope you will be willing to provide the needed conversion parts when the R&D is done, a lot of us will want them from you.

This 20 cc engine might surprise us..Is going to be smooth, and will run more rpm than the 231 because of its size.

The motor already suprised me when my buddy got one for a plank, I had to be the test pilot, and it had more power and ran better than I thought it would. The only change needed is the ignition system, which consumes way too much juice. Since Copperclad has already found an alternative to the stock one....it will without a doubt be "The Next Great Copperclad Heli!" Lets call it the Copperclad 600G.

this first photo is of the 600n clutch setup next to the R-90

here is the R-90 clutch with the 600n bearing case

this is the R-90 pinion turned down to except a bored out 600n pinion

and this last photo shows the R-90 clutch layed on the modified 600n frame graphic

i will have photos of the alloy frame in the morning , the alloy for the baseplate is suppose to come tomorrow also

You move fast, love the work you are doing.

I use the same pinion mounting for my 90 4stroke conversion.

Cant wait to see more.

we can never have too many, can we ?

Hi Dana, Are you going to leave the starter shaft out and just use one bearing in the 600 housing?, that would explain the servo aperture above the housing.
I Can’t wait to see the alloy frames,
Should you decide to market this in kit form can you pencil me in for a full kit.

hi
thanks guys , i would love to produce a kit , but at this stage it is a bit too early , as i really want to get some time on the airframe and see how it likes the new engine

Peter , yes i am leaving the start shaft out , i think one of the greatest things about gassers is the pull start , and the start shaft in the bearing case does not support the clutch bell , i do have the option of adding a 6mm shaft to the top of the pinion and then use the start shaft bearing to help support the bell , and a third option would be to run the start shaft and bearing and leave off the coupler , i have been in the shop and have the alloy frames done , dana

What are you going to use for the fan shroud?

hi Jack
my bad , i haven't posted info on the engine and fan and fan shroud , i am using this same setup in an R-90 conversion

i am using a Zenoah G-20ei with a fan and shroud off a Predator gasser , the predator fan hub has a 19mm bore that matches the R-90 clutch , so it transitions from Predator parts to R-90 parts and lastly to 600n at the pinion , the big reason for all this runaround on three different sets of parts is the fan and shroud that come with the 600n are no where near big enough to handle the cooling for the G-20 engine , on top of that , the G-20 has a tapered crank shaft hence the Predator fan hub , as it mounts directly to the G-20 , here are some photos of the engine , fan , and shroud , dana

I would use the Predator glow clutch, its not dished out on the shoes, which will provide better holding power at the lower a rpm.. its 47 mm diameter, and same thickness as what you have now..

I would also fill in the inside of the shroud on the sides with balsa to direct more air to the fins...Just make the transition smooth on the inside...

hi

i just did a trial fit on the baseplate and wanted to post some photos , i just ordered a set of the brackets Align uses to mount the baseplate to the side frames , i am going to add a set just behind the engine , so there will be six instead of four , this will tie the sides and bottom together better and i am thinking it will stiffen the baseplate and frame , not sure if it is needed but as easy as it is , i will add them , i've got a bit of phutzing around to do on it but i am thinking the next photos i post should start to look a lot more helicopterish , dana

You really need to copper plate/anodise the aluminium frames a copper colour, then it will be a real copper clad.

Great job as usual, please keep it up. I cant wait to hear how the maiden goes.

hi
just waiting for the extra pair of frame mounting blocks to arrive , and going over some final details , Anti Rotation Guide , strut mounts , the bell is a bit too close to the shroud , so in my usual fashion i will punt on it

and of course i wanted to thank every one for the positive support , hard to step into a project like this and not have to go out on a limb , here and there , i know with a first off there are bound to be some problems , and feel it is better to have a start , and from that starting point a place to learn from , i can honestly say , i will be surprized if i don't have some problems , i figure it is all part of the learning experience , and i feel if it wasen't a challenge , it probably wouldn't be much fun either

all in all it has been a very interesting project , it will be interesting to first see if it flies at all (knock knock) , and then to what degree it holds up , i feel confident that even if my system is a failure , it very well may give someone else some help to a successful solution , thanks again , dana

Copperclad:

I really doubt that your system will fail, clearly you know what you are doing. At the worst you might need some gearing adjustment to find the right headspeed for the load range of the motor, but I don't even think that will be a problem.

I too would be proud to have mine copper plated, and I would tell everyone why that is
