Hey Guys many of you may have noticed this already but for those who haven't...

I wanted to re-grease the auto unit and inspect the bearings but dreaded stripping down the frames. After looking at it for a while I discovered by removing a very small piece of the lower frame which obstructed a bolt head I would be able to drop out the entire drive train for inspection.

The only other thing which makes it easier is to elongate the hole for the ground strap so you do not have to remove the boom mount bolts - just loosen them and slide the boom forward to slip the belt off the pulley.

I haven't tried to slide it back in yet as I discovered a notchy bearing and need to wait for a replacement. Fingers crossed it will be as easy as the removal.

Here is a pic. I need to square it off and tidy it up a bit yet.

Fergus

Hmm. I just use an Allen (Hex head) wrench with a shortened "L" on it to do mine. Works good in other tight places as well. Whatever works though. Good find.

There was no way that bolt was going to come out past the lower frame in order to release the bearing block without modification on mine

How does an allen key help?

That bolt should be the last one to come out. Just drop the Aluminun block slightly and the bolt will tip upwards. Comes right out.

ummm.. PUT THE FILE DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE HELI

Could be worse. I could have spent the time I waisted on this frame mod thread stripping the frames

Don't worry about it. You still made it easier and really didn't harm anything by notching that small bit. Just clean it up and go about your business.

This is good to know.

How often should this maintenance be performed?

You could set a maintenance schedule for these things. With the weather I am getting here at the moment I find this kind of routine maintenance is easy to fit in. There is no flying to be done

It also depends what grease you are using. The more viscous the grease the more often it will need to be checked.

One tip I have is to keep one of the old bearings to use as a press to tap on with a rubber mallet to remove the bearings from the blocks for re-greasing. That way you will avoid applying force to the inner race of the bearings.

The other great tip is this little guy - The Greaser.

It allows new grease to be pressed into shielded bearings and the old stuff just comes out the top. This thick automotive grease came with the greaser and is very good.
