Got the Esky outrunner for my HBK2. Looks like it would be easy to wreck pressing the pinion on. How did you do it?

Do you have a drill press or access to one?
Set the motor's back end on a scrap of wood - shaft facing up. Open the drill chuck just enough so that the chuck fits over the shaft and rests on the pinion. Pull down on the handle slowly until the chuck presses the pinion on.

I've never wrecked a pinion/shaft/motor this way.

That sounds good Jerry. It seems the shaft is just a little recessed on this motor though. Its like I need a little something there to support the shaft on the backside. If I just press against the present setup Im pressing against the bearings it appears. Maybe a tiny ball bearing or something in that recess would help?

I don't. I use pinions with grub screws to lock it onto the shaft. A tiny dab of Loctite on the grub screw and don't use the motor until the Loctite has had time to setup. If you want to make absolutely certain the pinion won't move, file or dremel a small flat spot on the shaft for the grub screw to bottom on.

I learned to fly on a Trex, I learned to crash on a Blade CP...

Maybe drive a finishing nail into the wood to the depth that the shaft is recessed? Sit the motor over this - allow the nail tip to support the shaft. Cut the fine tip off to give a wider support.

Ill second grub screw pinion and loctite. the thought of applying pressure to the can scares me. one oops and you just offbalanced the outrunner.

All went well. I have a small size 0 dake arbor press. I did similar to what Jerry suggested and put a small metal "pill" under the drive shaft. Now I see the screw holes in the 3800kv motor and the King frame don't exactly match. I have a little more work to do. Thanks for all the thoughts on it.

I sure like the idea of press on vs grub just to chicken**** to pull it off without a press. glad to hear you got it done and I think we all have had to trim the king motor mount a bit thats a easy price to pay for a good powerplant.

Done properly pressing a pinion on won't put any pressure on the can - just to the opposing ends of the shaft.

I know as soon as I tried to press on a pinion the motor would pop out and gouge the side of the outrunner ruining the motor.

Some of you may remember shlepprock?

One of those little Harbourfreight arbor presses would do the trick. Got to thinking about how these brushless motors are made and the bottom of the motor (opposite the pinion when pressing) is fixed to the shaft there so probably less danger than I first suspected. Now to pull that little pinion would be tough without a little puller which I'm sure they sell.

Pinion puller - a necessity. Without one YOU WILL screw up a motor when removing a pinion. Most all shops that have anything to do with r/c electric motors (cars, trucks, helis, planes) have them.

Have it in hand before even thinking about pulling that pinion.

are they that hard? I would think you could crush a couple teeth with good pliers and crack the pinion off with no damage? But like I said I would be the first to man handle it and break the motor. Just curious about presson pinions as I have never tried one. I may be going to steel with grub screw on my king.

I used a c clamp and a socket , not one problem, put the motor in the freezer, for about 20 minute," pull it out fast"[size=small] put the pinion on press it on with ,a socket alittle bigger than the pinion itself, bingo bango sweet, i just used the stock pinion measurement for the right depth,,

Could make a puller pretty easy out of a big nut thats drilled and tapped from the side. Opposing side of nut slotted to go under pinion, presto.
