Nexus conversion

Check my gallery. I now have a digital camera. Nexus, originally from my littlebird, into a police helicopter. Unfinished, but full cockpit with no holes.

Refinements include lightened fuse (lots of internal sanding and dremmeling, can see the light coming through in some places), very slight forward angle on the main shaft, internal electric 5v fan that pumps 7.3cfm extra air across cylinder head and out through grille in bottom of fuse (powerful little sucker, had to get it from the US), nav lights, flexible tail shaft drive, landing gear transfers shock to mechanics frame).

Will refit into my littlebird once finished (don't hold your breath, still lots to do, mechanics basically finished, then testing, and the actual modelling detail).

Project was made a reality by my good friend Marcos de Almeida (Aust Defence Force Academy School of Aeronatical and Space Engineering) who did all the machine work. Thanks Marcos. How do you thank some one that has taken you from paper to metal.

Hey,
I'm in the process of redoing my Rescue version. I'm putting a GV-1 in it and a FMA Copilot, these should make it easier to hold a steady hover while I drop the crewman and raise him up.
The heli looks great as I bring it into a hover and drop the guy down slowly and then bring him up and as he gets close to the top I start into foward flight slowly.
Any updates on other projects.

Little Bird - Ebay

I just picked up a Little Bird on Ebay for $50.

Going to do the conversion as I already have a tricked out Hawk Sport to fit it onto that I am a little bored with.

Great thread!

nice Pics

Nice pictures - Is the glass/plastic on the canopy stock or did you replace it with lexan?

Has anyone clearcoated for extra shine / protection from Nitro?

the glass is stock.

I did take some good advice and built myself a stinger. You can see a photo in the gallery. Manufactured it out of the original Hawk canopy mount, a 4-40 rod, and an extra 3mm bolt and safety nut.

I'm very happy about the outcome. Handling is really good. Much better than the Airwolf was. Can't wait to take it to the field and show it off....lol.

Airwolf? Do tell my friend!

Waiting for my Little bird to arrive... considering purchasing another
hawk sport for another conversion if this one comes out great.

Stinger? Which Pic?

I made a tail wire to keep the tail out of the weeds. Alot of weight is on the rear of the skids and on uneven ground the bird sits a little tail low.

The photo is not fully representative as I have trimmed the wire. But its a good way to add one. I cut the Hawk Sport canopy mount (black part) in half and used a 3mm bolt to bolt it to the tail. Then I just bent and screwed a 4-40 rod in place.

So far the bird has about 4 or 5 flights on it. All looks good. I may do another one now that I have figured it out. There are a couple of areas I could improve on. I dremeled too much in a couple places.

I'm a bit concerned as to how well the body and landing gear screws will hold up to flying. Do they start to back out? I guess I could put a drop of ca on them if they do.

I gooped the windscreen even though it snaps in pretty good. Also had to goop the two top rear antennas.

You do have enough room to change the plug in the Hawk. And you can take the body off and put it back on without disassembling any mechs. Thats a big plus. I have made several flights and the stock gear appear plenty strong to handle the bird's weight.

I like these body's better than the Century / Funkey stuff. But keep in mind its only a sport scaler.

What is the consensus on mechanics for these???

I see that Hawks, Ventures, Raptors, Shuttles and who knows what else has been fitted in these. I have a Raptor 30 V1 waiting for a project. The AH-6 is sitting in the garage waiting for mechanics. Would I be better off getting rid on the Raptor and getting different mechanics?
I have mine ready to start. Lots of good info on this thread. Greately appreciated.

Thanks,

Luis

Sounds good to me.

I bet someone has done it with Rappy Mech's.

In my opinion, if you can take some measurements to see if the
rappy will fit in the fuse, that the boom will line up with some
"fine tuning" you should be good.

The only thing I would be worried about is that long pitch arm on top bobbing up and down... it might be an issues with the shape of the canopy... not sure of the clearance.

Definitely the pitch arm is a main concern. I'm thinking the ultimate mechs for this will be the Venture. CCPM right off the bat and preserve the cabin. I think it is very important to preserve the cabin.

Fan

Some one ask about a fan?

I'm using a Nexus Forza 46. Larger and lower position makes cylinder head hang completely out below the cooling shroud. I extended the shroud (common idea, but see http://pages.sbcglobal.net/g2driver/_wsn/page3.html) with .25mm aluminium (really light) and then put a 45mmx45mmx9mm 5v fan below (I think only 9gms all up). Driven by 6v battery / 5.4v regulator in the main forward console.

The fan points slightly down the cylinder head, draws cool air from below the seats/console through hole cut in the rear wall. The angle blows the air down the head and out the bottom, hopefully also helps guides the air coming from the normal fan down (it needs to because the standard shroud not only stops short, but also the head hangs out forward of the standard shroud).

The angle of the nexus main frame (no forward servo frame because all servos are rear mounted) fits snug against the rear wall and sort of seals the fan in, forcing it to draw most of the air from the cabin through the hole in the rear wall and not from inside the rear compartment.

Hope this gives you some ideas

Hey,

I make the ducts for my conversions out of Fiber Glass, I run the duct all the way out the bottom. This helps to create a low pressure zone in the fuselage which get fresh air from the top. I take a square of fiber glass and fold it in half and use 12 min. epoxy mixed with alcohol and spread it with a card. It is light and won't cause any problems if it touches metal.

Any problem with the fiberglass or expoxy burning if it touches the head?

Hey brtmn,
I just make sure nothing touches the head. The duct work is simply there to vector the cooling air over the head and out of the fuselage as effciently as possible.
I try not to add any metal to my heli's because any metal on metal contact can be a big problem on even a well balanced heli. Fiberglass is cheap and easy to work with and I on the other hand maybe cheap, but I am impossible to work with.
