e-Minicopter Joker > Carvec on my MJ2

I have had a Carvec system sitting in a box for about 1 year, waiting for time to put it on my MJ2. I finally put it on and flew for the first time today. What a sweet system!! It holds the heli dead nuts on. I don't have the altitude or GPS options, but I could still fly hands-off for 10 to 15 seconds at a time in near-calm conditions. I could have gone longer except I was at the softball field and didn't want to take a chance on hitting a light pole.

The system takes about 90 percent of the excitement out of heli flying, which is something I need in consideration of my advancing years.

Setup is a bit of a bear. I probably put 12 to 15 hours in it over the course of a week. But it is really worth it. The system should pay for itself in reduced stress on heli components, cameras, and the old man himself. Flight time for AP work is going to go way down, too. I'll be able to get the shot I want more quickly.

Regards,
Steve S.

Hi Steve,

I sympathasize with you. I spent over over a year trying to get my Bergen Intrepid to run smoothly enough to have the Carvec work with it, with no success. I now have an MJ2 and am close to putting it in the air for the first test flight with the Carvec.

Glad to hear your positive response and can't wait to experience the "dead nuts on" control.

Maybe I should have said the Carvec takes the "hel" out of helicopters.

Sounds great! I'm going to be using Helicommand Profi, which should offer similar results, at a slightly cheaper price. I lost of the joy of shooting photos, with the stress of helicopter flying.

I'd imagine the helicommand is significantly easier to get as well... last I heard, there was quite a wait to get the carvec system.

Carvec

I found the initial setup of the Carvec to be a bit slow also, however if I had to install it on a new heli now, I'm pretty sure I could do the software side of it in under 2 hours at my ease.
JohnC provides excellent support by email but could do with updating his docs a bit more frequently and maybe add to it a bit with a quickstart guide and an FAQ.

It's a pretty amazing system though, the data logging capabilities are extremely exhaustive. Once its trimmed right its just so rock solid and any drift is just due to wind, in calm conditions it more or less pole mounts the heli.

I'm still working on the trim. I made a new mount for the Carvec and now I need to retrim the system. With the old mount, the Carvec was leaning a little bit, so I kept having to compensate with the cyclic. A method for in-flight calibration would be nice--like what is available with the General Laser Stabilizer that I have on my J2. (Now that is a manual that is in serious need of a rewrite.)

I had hoped to get the trimming completed today, but my voltage regulator seems to have died, and unless FMA can troubleshoot it via e-mail, I am going to have to wait for a replacement.

I agree that the Carvec manual(s) could use a little work and updating--maybe a reorganization would take care of most of the problems. All the information is probably there, but it is not necessarily where you expect to see it.

Regards,
Steve S.

I have no complaints. I was doing AP from about 500 feet in a wind yesterday that was 20+ mph. The MJ2 was a speck. I never would have gone above 100 feet in that kind of wind w/o the Carvec. I have the unit trimmed out properly now and it is rock solid. The wind will still blow you around (I don't have the GPS option), but if you plan for it in advance, you can use it to your advantage.

Steve S.

So far, so good here. I've been going very slowly, and have just sent John the first test flight recording (ie without Carvec engaged). His preliminary response was that things looked good, and I'm just waiting for confirmation of my configuration before activating the Carvec in flight.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks for your inputs. It really re affirms , everybody have been only talking good things about CARVEC.

I am also quiet willing to take the plunge of getting one , my only concern is that John shouldn't become over busy where he is not able to answer to our replies for long time.( since he is only one person running the complete operation)

I have always had a very rapid response from John--usually on the same day that I have sent him an e-mail. Maybe he is out of town and is unable to read his e-mail right now.

Me too, John has almost always responded to my emails within the same day, regardless of his location.

My problem is the sinking dollar, won't be long and they'll be nearly worthless

Hmmm. When my brother-in-law went to Thailand, he came back with a wife who was 30 years younger than he was.

You know, that is one of those confusing things about the wives of brothers in law. This particular brother in law is my wife's brother. So the little Thai cutie pie is probably my sister in law once removed or something like that.
