I am considering the YS80 for in my Freya since is on the heavy side. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about the engine? Also, will the stock gearing of the Freya work with the YS80 or do I have to change the gears? Thanks!

I too

Dang Kurt,

We again are thinking right along the same track. I have been working on the same idea. YS 80 or OS 90, The big thing I have read is that the Freya needs the delrina 93 tooth. Reason for the Delrina is that a couple folks striped the teeth out of the plastic gear. Also that you need an 11 tooth pinion. Nope you can't buy this pinion yet. Hirobo makes a 12 and a 10 but not the 11. Jeff Green says that Hirobo is working on one. Also MinAir is going to have one soon. This gives the close to the 8.4:1 ratio that everyone has agreed that is neccessary for these engines.

So what to do? Start stocking up on the above items and wait till they release the 11 tooth pinion.

For what it's worth, I'm leaning toward the YS too. I like the pump system.

Thanks Volkul...I kinda thought that I was going to have to change the gearing. Hopefully, Hirobo will have the new gear available by next flying season....weather is getting colder every day here in PA!

From what I hear

I have been reading the Eagle group and they say the MinAir gear is the same pitch and thread to go into the Freya clutch bell. However there is another option. Bergen makes an 11 tooth pinion that some have had good luck with. The problem is that you need to do a bit of machining to make it work.

1. Drill and tap the clutchbell to match the Bergen threads.
2. The height needs to be milled down too.

There is one minor downfall the gear tooth pitch isn't the same but it's very close and they work. Since you are a machinst this shouldn't be to big of a deal.

BTW, the gear costs $25 on the Bergen site.
