Hey,
So, what do I need to buy in order to install my GY401 gyro in the HBK2?
Will I need a different radio and receiver, or can I just plug it into the stock, existing components in the HBK2?
I see I might be spending another $400 just to use my already owned 401.
Man, I knew I shouldn't have thought I could get back into the hobby for cheaper than before. So long house and kids...

Going broke and OK with it.

Chewy, Relax, you don't have to go broke to have FUN, brush the fur out of your eyes and quit crying Seriously, you can use the 401 without upgrading everthing else. You just have to set it up right, thats all.

OK, that relaxes me a little bit. Thanks!

What should I be looking for to set it up right?

I don't want to give you the wrong advice Chewy, I don't have a 401. Heard they are Great gyros . Tryan is running the 240 I believe and has it set up nice. Fenderstrat also really knows how to set up a gyro along with many others. You might have to wait awhile to get some good replies but they Will come. If you build it--they will come.

I hear ya, thanks.
Yah, the 240 is basically the same as the 401.
I just want to make sure I can use the stock Tx and not have to upgrade for a while, so I can have fun without spending too much more money.
Of course according to FedEx tracking I won't get the HBK2 until next Tuesday anyway, so I have time to get more info.
Thanks!

I believe the biggest diff between a 401 and the 240 is remote gain. and hh/rate mode switch and the ability to use a digital tail servo. All I did with the 240 is normal setup like the directions show. If you no longer have the manual look up your gyro on towerhobbies and get the pdf manual. any ways shortcut plug gyro into ch4 of reciever and plug tail servo in gyro turn gain to 80% and switch to rate mode. Hover heli if tail drifts slide the tail servo forward or back till it holds perfect in rate mode. then switch to HH if the tail wags which it probably will turn gain down around 70% then your done. there is another wire from the gyro this is what gets split for remote gain and mode switching that im not sure youll have to get that manual but I believe this is only if you dont want to adjust it on the gyro itself. like I said download the towerhobbies manual on the remote functions But I dont believe you need them at all. Im at work a little too busy to look it up for you.

BTW the wife is sending out the deans connectors today.

Aha! Thanks. That's what I was also wondering.
I'll be able to make adjustments on the gyro itelf, I don't really require the remote adjustment capability. Maybe a while down the road I will get a radio which will allow me to program stuff like that.
When I flew 50 nitro birds I used the JR9303, it was so easy and quick to program and make adjustments during a flight cycle.
Thanks again, for the Deans

The GY401 don't have a gyro gain adjuster on the case. The two adjustment pots on the 401 are for delay and travel limit. I assume the gain can only be changed from a digital radio but I don't have any experience with the stock radio to say for sure.

I forgot we've been through this before the 401 needs a gain input it switches to HH past 50%. All controlled by a programmable radio. I haven't had a stock radio to see if ch5 can be used for it. I finally had time to read the manual from towerhobbies and it all clicked. a little dejavu.

I have the gy401 gyro on my HBK2 and you will need a computer radio to make gain adjustments. ch 5 on the rx is for the gain. In addition, the gyro need to start up in HH mode.

jmc, can't you adjust the gain on the Gyro itself if you want ??????

No, the gain setting is done on the radio. There is no gain setting on the gyro.

OH wow, What would happen if he tried it on the esky transmitter. It has a switch for Rate and HH but no remote gain. Are you sure it won't work ??????

I dont understand that much either I understand the radio controls gain and mode through ch5 and you have to set the gain in the radio by programming say 70% in idle-up or whatever your mode. Could you limit the gain any other way so you dont hit a 100%. Im assuming it would be as simple as adding a potentiometer in line with ch5 of the reciever limiting an analog voltage to the gyro.

Here is my setting on the futaba 7c. I am going to experiment in a little while. "A" setting is HH and "N" is rate mode. I am going to disable the gyro setting on the 7c and see what happens. I will report back on my finding.

The heading hold/rate switch is great but one of the knobs on top would have to work in relation with channel 5 for the remote gain adjust to work.

I'm just trying to get to whether it will work or not without remote gain. Chewy might discouraged if he gatta shell alot of doe right now, and you know that irritating sound he makes when he gets MAD. Chewy might have to plug it in and see if HE can get it work.

Th delay is used to correct tail hunting at pirouette stops.
