Does anyone have any advice as far as using 4-cycle motors on Heli's? If so, which?

I've chosen the Century Hawk for my first Heli, is there a 4-cycle motor that will fit it?

That would be the Century Phoenix. They sell a conversion kit to convert a Hawk. However, I would not recommend an FS52 powered heli as a first attempt. The FS52 has marginal power, so it requires to be tuned just-so to have enough power, and at the same time not overheat.

The major differences are the gear ratio and throttle linkage.

If you have a lot of four stroke experience then go for it. Even then, airplane experience with four strokes will only get you so far. I would advise getting a head speed tach and cylinder head temp meter to make setup easier. Four strokes don't sound like two strokes, so it's hard to tell the RPM by ear, expecially if the people helping you are used to two strokes. The temp. guage helps because you can't simply peak the RPM then back off a few hundred as you do with a plane.

Something like the YS63 has (a lot!) more power, so if you can get it to fit, and the gear ratio is good, you will have a much easier time. I did see a web page somewhere about a Raptor 30 converted to YS63 power. It was quite a bit of work, but the result seemed to be a lot better than the FS52 powered models.

4-stroke in Hawk

Phil Cole is up to his usual standards of dishing out GOOD advice.

If you are a beginner, why burden yourself with extra complications.

I and a friend have converted to the OS52FS in one each of our Hawks (done for scale purposes) and they fly OK. Rolls. tight loops and stall turns are about the limit of its practical power for aerobatics. They are substantially less power and much harder to set right (needle valves and throttle curves) when compared to the great little OS32SXH.
Once set, they run fine, but they did require an extra "learning" curve to learn to set properly.

I would not recommend them except for scale type of flying on the lighter scale ships such as their Schweizer 300.

Now their new Bell 47G would be a real treat with the YS63. I wonder if the clutch threading would fit?....hmmm...food for thought.
