HS,
I try to run a head speed of 1500 or less. My nitro Cobra i managed to get down to 1100 rpm !! Check this link out for Vario's recommendation.

www.vario-helicopter.de/fileadmin/M...rehzahl_eng.pdf

Also I noticed that you have carbon side frames, try to mount the spektrum receivers away from it. It might be better if you can mount the receivers on the front on the fuselage. Don't mount them on the frame. I think at least 2 inches from the carbon and any metals and batteries is a good starting point.

Good Luck on your next flight.

Hi wilerbee... Thanks for all your help...

I used the middle setting which is "Rigid On" currently set to 70%...

There were wind gust from my right and it seem to control the "ballooning"...

Once I am confident that the electrical glitch that caused my minor crash is gone... I will test the Horizontal mode...

I am concerned about using the "Horizontal Mode"... I noticed that when on the ground, after everything is initialized, the swash plate has a slight movement when I switch to "Horizontal Mode"... This small "twitch" could result in significant movement in flight... Have you or anyone experienced this????

I am also somewhat concerned about using the "Position" mode as I understand that if I am too low, it may go out-of-control...

HS,

The autotrim function is used to eliminate this swashplate movement when switching on either position or horizontal modes.Since I dislike the autotrim function, What I do is hover the heli with hor and pos mode off, trim it out for steady hovering and then land. After landing i disconnect the main battery supply to the ESC but keep the receiver batt on, press the button on the Helicommand until it turns solid green then switch off the receiver batt to cycle Helicommand. The action makes Helicommand regconize the neutral trim settings that you just did. I do this step every time I fly the heli due to different conditions will require a different trim setting. Once this is done you should see no swash plate movement when you switch between off to hor and pos mode.
With the position mode, the lower you go the more accurate it is, it won't work higher than 9 feet. Contrast has to be good, if contrast is bad then helicommand automatically switches over to horizontal mode until contrast is regained. I think you need to go over the online instructions again, it's all in there. It doesn't pay to be lazy when you have all that money and time invested !!!!

Hi wilerbee..

The weather has been bad the last week (snow, rain, sleet, wind)...

I really like your suggestion of putting the pilot switch on a linear slider... I am going my radio and test the slider switch...

I like the idea of slowly increasing the gain on horizontal/position during initial testing, much safer...

I have studied the HeliCommand instruction, but input from folks like you with hands-on experience is most helpful... It would be great if someone wrote a user guide based a compilation of user feedback/input...

I am going to use your trim procedure initially, then play with the auto-trim for fun... I would agree that the auto-trim can be challenging and limited... If it need 8 seconds of solid hover this could be difficult...

I plan to get back into the very soon...

Thanks for your help...

HS,

When playing with autotrim, best to assign it to the trainer switch, and remember to reassign the throttle cut to another switch ! Don't ask me how I know ! Also best to have someone to help with depressing the switch while you hover. I tried doing that on my own, almost impossible.

Good Luck and keep at it. I am still playing around with Helicommand, so I'm no expert, but once you have some hands on experience and you go back to read up on the instructions, many things become clearer and it makes more sense. That's why you need to keep going back to the instructions and make notes on your settings !

Have fun and please keep us updated.

Hi Folks...

Did my 5th test flight today... Cold fingers, fresh snow has not started to melt yet!!!

I have gain confidence that the electrical glitch is gone... Now it's time to start adjusting things...

I notice that when I take-off there is a point when the helicopter seems to "leap into the air"... Once a get a stable hover going I notice it will assent and decend rapidly... Her is what it tried today:

Idle Up # 1 = 86% 1200 rpm / Curve 33/42/50/65/78
Idle Up # 2 = 90% not measured / Curve 33/42/51/62/73

This thing really wants to fly seems like a lot of power???

HS,

Great ! Does your radio have the curve smoothing function ? I have experienced that too and got rid of it by playing around with the throttle curve.
Are you going to put it all together and fly now ?

Hi Folks....

Finely had some good weather...

I feel confident that the electrical glitch I had is now gone...

Took the training gear off and did some slow patterns and several touch & go(s)...

I can't believe just how well the HeliCommand actually works in the flybarless mode... Very stable, smooth, and seems to not be bothered by the wind...

Update...

I can't believe how well this helicopter flys!!!

I did some tweaking on the RIDGID settings and rotor speed... I am VERY HAPPY with the Helicommand RIDGID device...

I have not tried the selectable HORZ & POSI setting yet, but if they work as well as the RIDGE function it will be great fun...

I will take some video and psot it...

Hi Folks UPDATE

Took awhile to get my last Dewalt battery pack, but it arrived yesterday... Tore it apart and built a 5S2P pack...

I now have a 10S2P A123 Lipo setup for my project... I used a CBA to characterize the packs and notice a slight difference between them...

Reprogrammed the CC110HV ESC to a cut off of 2.3 volts per cell, does this seem resonable? Will need to now time the STD 10S4P now...

UPDATE

I now have just about everything tweaked... Just updated the CC 110HV to latest firmware...

I tested the Helicommand "POSITION" function tonight...

I can't believe how well the Helicommand "POSITION" function works!!!

I saw smaller helicopters operating in the position mode and was worried about how much they twitched around while in a hover...

The Helicommand "POSITION" mode in my 700mm ship is so stable it works far beyond my expectations...

To test it I programmed the pilot function on a slider and creeped up on it until I had confidence with the function...

I will try to take a video of the unit in operation...

Thanks wilerbee....

Hey HS,

Now it's the time to do it all up on your heli !! I just help my friend setup his Helicommand and he loves it !!

For me it is the BEST flybarless system on the market !!
