I half agree, but at the same time I bet as a cyclist you're at more danger from the cars on that road than from the heli above it.

I never knew this hobby was getting a bad name Do you have any examples of why it is getting a bad name?

RC Heli's have been used in the movie industry for a long time. There use in the Movie Industry in no way reflects on our Hobby. They have or should have insurance (not AMA) for any incidents that may occur during the filming.

What is with all these recent blogs about Heli Safety. Have any of you looked at the Safety records of other hobbies and sports. We have one of the highest safety records out there. There has only been one death in the USA related to Heli's and I believe only around 5 deaths worldwide that have been reported. Compare that to Running, bicycling, fishing, baseball,Car Racing, R/C Air Planes. How many people have been killed by full scale aircraft crashing into there homes? I don't see you complaining about those planes flying over your towns.

I am kind of guessing but normally for movie/music/promo videos a sequence is planned step by step with a "storyboard" and the cars, cyclists, extras are aware of what to expect. That, to me is kind of controlled, and in this case it didn´t look that way when the guy in the front was spotting pedestrians.
I wonder what traffic cop would ask? why is the pilot hiding in the back of the van? What happens when the driver hits a pothole or bump? Maybe the pilot pokes the spotters eye out with his aerial!

Flying over the heads of civilians; distracting oncoming traffic; flying over roads - all things that we generally advise against.

On the other hand, had I been cycling on a similar road in the UK, in an average afternoon I reckon about half a dozen drivers would pass me with <1' clearance and with a speed differential of 40mph or more. I reckon my injuries if I were hit by the helicopter might be comparable to those if I was hit by a car. But given the choice I think I'd rather have the helicopter fly overhead half a dozen times.

My impression was that the people who made the video were careful and competent. Whether it was wise is another matter - I don't think I'd do it myself. The way things are looking on youtube at the minute, it's only a matter of time before they're hit by a planker coming the other way.

Fair comment there wlfk!

I'd have been distracted by the GT 40s if I'd been driving in the opposite direction.... what heli?

Get a motorcycle, then you can be the one passing the cars at a differential speed of more than 40 mph at less than a foot away

I guess a turbine heli camera platform (aka expensive) would have had a damned good pre flight check done. You know nothings going to fall off it etc. but you're right about a distraction - even the guy in the black trenchcoat ducked slightly as it went above his head near the end of the video.

I noticed that too. He is supposed to be looking all macho and tuff but he ducks . Not that I blame him... that heli was within a few feet of his head. Thanks for the video link.

Anyone know what video this is from? It would be interesting to see the final cut of the video.

Impressive. But driving on the wrong side of the road and passing on sharp curves. Just kidding, it was great. It looked like a controlled environment but I sure wouldn't want to be any of those extras with that large machete coming that close to me.

Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. !

Gian,
You obviously fail to appreciate the danger a helicopter in close quarters represents. Unless that whole video was made in a closed set, with every person involved clearly instructed as to where to be and what to do plus escape processes, that video was extremely irresponsible.

It is time some people move beyond being impressed by the technical aspects to look into the risks taken to achieve the result.

If the sequence was in fact shot in a completely closed set, I am also impressed, but certainly not if it wasn't.

Ok Bigguy,
You know what? I absolutely understand the dangers of a helicopter. These are professionals, like yourself, who, I am sure, realize that there is a risk involved. When you all watch a movie, how do you enjoy it knowing that people took risks to make it, or that someone might take a bad idea home with them and try it themselves? Why can't you all ENJOY what you and others do?

This is all rhetoric, of course. I'm sure that I'm 'wrong' and everyone that does anything remotely risque should be shut-down.
