e-Minicopter Joker > Shulze speed controller question - 40-160

I am testing an Joker for a friend

10S4P - old 8000 (red) flightpower Joker packs (two at 5S each). Full charge showing 42V with both packs connected together.

Actro 24-4 motor

Shulze 40-160 controller, the big pop tart unit

Straight line throttle curve at 55% gives 1700 headspeed

So here is the problem

Heli runs fine for about 3 or 4 minutes then motor starts surging and tail kicking. Land it, check pack voltage and it is just over 39V

I am assuming it is the battery not keeping up with the demand by the ESC, but in all my previous experiences, this problem just results in the headspeed decaying, not a surging from the ESC

Questions

Is this normal for a worn out battery and this controller?

Is something wrong with the controller?

Is it ok to run at 55%? Seems to me that the voltage and motor selection are mismatched, given I always try to run 90 or 95% on controllers with governor mode. Seems this motor should run on 8S

Thanks in advance for your replies.

It sounds like worn-out batteries to me. I also have a "pop-tart" Schulze (that's cute) on my MJ2. Once the batteries start surging, I know it is time to order a replacement. I can usually coax a few additional flights out of them, but they are on borrowed time.

My two older 10s3p packs did the same thing a couple weeks ago.
I wonder if the Pop Tart is a little harder these packs? Man I hate to loose these packs. They still charge and balance right on. Its just real weird that they both would do this at the same time. I know its the older packs that are the problem because my newer packs work fine.

When they go ......they go.....I guess!

I had a schulze do the exact same thing to me. Are you sure your not hitting the RPM limit?

Maybe it is a Schulze-specific problem. When I put a battery pack that has been surging on the MJ2 mit der Shulze onto a J2 that has a Jazz ESC, the pack just acts worn out. No surges, just an inability to hold headspeed for more than 30 seconds or so. It might be a governor thing. I go back and forth on the governator issue so much I can't remember how I had it set the last time I had the surge problem, though.

I do not use the Gov. mode....I have my throttle curve set 0.56.56.56.56 for 1270 headspeed. 14 tooth pinion and 810 v's.

I wouldn't think its hitting an RPM limit. Is this something that is set in Gov. mode? My newest pack does not loose headspeed like the other three old packs do.

I wish it was something simple!

Surging packs, had the same thing with some old packs today. My newer stuff worked fine.

39V on an 8000Mah pack after 4 minutes, sounds like they need some Surgery
