It works when I go over the min turbine rpm !

When I choose a rotorspeed of 836 this gives me a ShaftHi0 = 60.000 and more with example 900 rpm.

Is it correct that I only have a turbinespeed of 60.000 to 65.000 rpm with theese headspeed settings

If so the turbine is running just above idle at all times
on on my SPT5 turboprop in the turbo raven, I run 8000 rpm on the prop and above 100.000 rpm on the turbine itselv if I remember !

So the ShaftHi0 = 60.000 figure must only be figure or...

It must be the rpm of the shaft from the gearbox but strange you cant go below 50.000

Peter,

That shaft speed is the power turbine wheel shaft, not the gearbox output shaft or the gas generator shaft. The numbers should make more sense to you now

The shaft speeds you have posted from your governor screen look fine to me.

Hello agian !

The other day I fired my SPH5 up for the first time in my XLV conversion and I have some questions with respect to the 3 pos. switch and throttle/headspeed management in general on this setup. I am a bit confused I must say – it is more simple om my PHT3 !

Ok - throttle and aux 3. pos switch learned into ECU, so far so good. The aux switch has now 3 different headspeeds programmed by me according to manual !

Throttle trim full forward and the stick forward starts the turbine, stick back to idle and turbine stabilizes !

I am in normal mode with respect to pitch/throttle, because I do not like to have pitch when I move the stick !

What now ? – I can only run the revs up with the stick and I have not really any idea of the transition from idle to my lowest headspeed !

On your idle up RPM settings, just check the pitch curve and ensure you have a little negative, this way the hellie wont take off as it comes up to idle...

I move my throttle stick to half way, and then click into idle up 1,
this way the turbine doesnt roar as much when going from normal to idle up..

i have around 3o of negative below half stick, so there is no way that thing will take off...

For info and i am using Futaba FF9 super, with 9206 on cyclic

for info this is my pitch curve

NORM 0, 27.5,56.5,73, 90
IDLE1 0, 28.5,56,78,100
IDLE 2 0,29,56,73.5,90

THROTTLE Curve
NORM 0,25,50,75,100
IDLE 1 AND 2 STRAIGHT LINE 100%


I also agree the PHT3 is a much simpler turbine to setup, plug and play

Guys, I know it's not the turb but it's the head I'll be using with the Cat. I had to try it before I build the turb. No stabilization on it either, doesn't really need it but I do have a Rigid sitting here. Just wanted to share the video. Check out the autos, plenty of reserve.

Nice going Dan - I've been tempted to buy that 3-blade head before but didn't get round to it. Looks like it flies really smooth too.

Peter - I run the throttle curves the same as Matt (except for more points on the 9z) but I use the pitch in a slightly different.

Normal mode is pitch 'locked' at -0.5 degrees all the way across so the engine can spool-up and idle etc. without the heli lifting off. ID1 then has the flying pitch curve set and 100% throttle curve for the governor. ID2 is disabled with the switch position assigned to ID1 again just because I found it was never needed or used! I added a delay between Normal and ID1 which seems to help the head-speed accelerate a little smoother but it is not really required.

Another setup perspective for you

Hello again !

Ok I am actually flying a bit around now but I some tail questions.
I am running the long tailblades (2 blades) together with a GY401 and a Futaba BLS 451. In HH mode it really does not hold the tail, but drift

The gain it nearly op to 80 !

However I think it has plenty of power on tail when flying but tail feel strange in HH.

Any suggestions ?

Hi Peter,

Have you tried altering the Delay adjustment on the 401? I found at the default delay the response time was not best matched to cope with the inertia and slower response of the larger, heavier heli. A small adjustment improved the performance for me and I am only running gain of around the 65-70% mark from memory.

Also it might be worth checking your gyro mounting is compliant enough. The XLV head seems to produce quite noticeable cyclic-induced oscillation, much like some full-size machines, especially visible when flaring into the hover from forward flight. I use a mounting system with softer foam tape and an aluminium 'isolator' plate between the baseplate and the gyro which appears to work well.

I must add though, the XLV tail never appears (for me at least) to 'lock' into a rock-solid hold like you would see on a 50 or 90 size aerobatic machine, it should not drift noticably though. I have deliberately not pursued a super-solid heading-hold myself though as I wanted to keep the tail drive loads as low as possible.

Hope that info is of some use

As Mike said,

The tail will NEVER lock like a normal pod and boom.

But the person who i sold my XLV to put a high torque servo on, using a JR gyro, on the 401 some used the 9206 high torque servo, and made sure that the gyro was set to NOn DIGITAL mode, you then have 13kilo of torque holding that tail instead of aprrox 4K on the 9253/4 servo.

I did change my tail to the 3 bladed tail.

It still can be flown in HH using that servo. it wont be as quick, but then again you are not flying 3D with it.
