e-Gaui Hurricane 200 & 550 - EP100 > Hurricane 550 Hurricane amp draw and batteries?

My hurricane is in the mail, I got the pro version with 1100kv motor and 75 amp esc. With the stock gearing does anyone know about how many amps it will draw in a hover? How about with a 13 tooth pinion? I know this will be somewhat dependant on weight and mine will be built pretty heavy.

For batteries I am going to try some new Lipo's from United Hobbies. They are Zippy-H 3300mah 20c packs. They are only 41$ right now. I am hoping I won't be pulling 20c from them. I have had good success with some of their smaller packs so I am going to give these a try. They weight a 275grams.

If they are true 20c packs then they should be capable of 66Amps.

My setups pulls a high of 55Amps flying 3D. 500mm blades,22T pinion, 2200rpm head speed. 65-68amps at 2500rpm, 24T pinion.

A 13T pinon should get you about 1300 head speed I think. Not sure how many amps it would pull, but it should be well below (especially in a hover) the 66Amps the batteries are capable of.

Actually the head speed with stock main gearing/ 13t pinion/ 1100kv motor would be 2354 at 0% drag - or 2119 at 10% drag (the 10% is the number to go by) This might be just a little high if you are a beginner... but fine if you are intermediate to 3D. You can bring it down if you want... with your throttle curve... but don't go below 85%... as brushless setups are inefficent below that percentage. You will be getting less run times and generating heat build up in your ESC & motor. I prefer to stay 90% or higher.

There are some guys on the Hurri thread on HF - that have logged their amp draw with Eagletree data loggers - and if I remember right - with that motor, you will be looking at amp draw in the high 20s in a hover. You may want to go look it up over there to be sure. There are a good assortment of threads mentioning the figures from their eagletree's.

That is a good deal for that size battery! The 66 amp capability Tesla stated, should be fine for a 13t pinion/ 1100kv-1500w motor combination. They should be fine for your motor.

After you get them, please check back here and let us know what flight times you are getting out of them. I might just get a set. I have a similar motor to yours

John @ readyheli.com told me they are pretty much identical, as to yours and the one I got from him:

I am seeing 20 amps at hover with the stock setup, 14t, 890kV motor and 500mm woodies.

I will be sure to let you know about the batteries once I have some time on them but you may have to wait a little while. I am lucky enough that weather isn't my problem but I have never built/setup/flown a heli so I am planning on taking my time and starting off trying the radds program out. Keep the answers coming to my questions guys, i'm sure I will have many more.
