e-Minicopter Joker > Schulze 40.160H setup with a Plettenberg

Its been well over a year since I was last on RR so surprised I was actually able to remember my password and log in.

I recently acquired an MJ2, Schulze 40.160H ESC, and Plettenberg HP370/40/A2 which is being setup to take an auto pilot for autonomous flight. Battery is a 10S TP 7600mah.

The setup info for the ESC isnt the most user friendly and with this much power I'm a little hesitant to guess and have the thing tear me to shreds the first time I plug in the battery. I've had the experience of having a Trex go to full throttle immediately upon battery plug in and dont want to repeat with this thing.

Can somebody who has this combo tell me what dip switch settings you are using, and interpret for me what tones I should expect to hear when powering it up? Any other setup/configuration issues I should know about? Governor mode or throttle curves?

Any suggestions on an arming switch or some other easy means of making the heli "safe" when the flight pack is plugged in?

Thanks.

Here is a link to the dip switch settings.

If you are using Futaba Radio gear then you will likely have to reverse channel 3 (the throttle channel)

For the first connection I would advice removing the drive belt off the motor pinion as a precaution that way if it starts up the rotor wont start to spin up. For all future connections I like to engage throttle hold on the TX before making the connection just as an added safety measure.

I don't run the schulze myself so maybe others may chime in. I have heard the governor mode is not as good as the Kontronik Jazz and powerjazz so maybe curves would be the way to go again I have no direct experience with it though.

The Schulzes are the most user friendly ESCs out there.

As long as it's on heli DIP 2 I believe it will have the best slow start available.

you won't strip gears or have any unexpected jolts period!

Here's how I "had" my dip switch set...

I have a Futaba radio. I ran into the situation you mentioned about the motor starting up. As Fergus said remove the drive belt. When I first connected the battery the motor started up. You will have to reverse the throttle on Futaba.

Thanks for the feedback. So nooobs, you are using the governor? How do you like it and why did you choose it over using curves?

Looks like there is some variation in choosing low versus high RPM. I'll try low first. I assume for my app that will probably be fine.

Thanks for the tip on the drive belt for first start. Once the initial setup is done nobody has a suggestion for a way to safety the helicopter (other than setting throttle at a minimum and throttle hold? An acquaintance got a broken nose from his MJ while plugging in a battery due to an unexpected start and thats why I asked. I dont know details of his mishap so dont know how it happened.

That has to be a 40 160 thing.

I have a couple 32-55s and a 32-80 neither of which will arm if the throttle above zero.

a cardinal rule for starting glow helis is to hold the head block when doing so. I guess it would take three arms to do that with and eheli but if I knew that my ESC would light up if the throttle was completely off I'd figure a way to plug it in with one hand so the other was free.

better to strip belts or gears than a whack by a CF blade across the Shnozola or worse.

Set the throttle correctly initially and tested with the belt removed then once low stick position is set to zero and you are in the correct flight mode with the stick in low you should not have a problem.

On all my electric helis I set throttle low stick in normal mode to zero and then set identical pitch curves for normal and idle up 1. The throttle curves are also identical except for point one which is zero in normal and set to the value which achieves the desired headspeed at low stick in idle up 1. This process is the same whether the governor mode is used or not. I also use throttle hold when connecting the flightpack as an extra safety measure in case I bump the throttle stick by mistake. The second idle up can then be used for a 3d pitch curve.

All normal flying is done in idleup 1 where low stick will not result in the throttle disengaging in a descent. Normal is reserved for startup and shutdown. As the pitch curve in normal is identical to idleup1 there is no sudden change in pitch when the mode is changed the rotor just slowly spools down. Once it has slowed sufficiently I engage throttle hold before approaching the heli to disconnect the flightpack.

The settings were recommended to me. I forget who told me. But anyway it worked well during the week I had it. Yes I crashed it and it's not because of the ESC. Didn't get a chance to play with it.
