I just finished up coding my own. I'm using a .NET Micro framework board and a XBOB for the OSD section. I'm using the GHI electronics Embedded Master which also has an on board SD card slot that writes out FAT files. So I'm working on the sensing of the shutter closure and storing the GPS (5Hz update rate rocks) coordinates on the the SD card with an internal counter. So far its looking good. If anyone is interested, Ill try to put together a short video.

Features include Vertical Speed, GPS coordinates, Speed (MPH or KPH), Altitude (Feet or Meters), Bearing (compass direction), Elapsed time, DOP (Precision), # of sattelites.

Currently working on packaging the boards and GPS.

Great info on the Dragon - auto fly back option looks interesting.

I'd like an OSD that not only displays but can also altitude hold - but not to Carvec's price.

They'd be perfect.

Auto fly back is a feature I run on an airplane, U-NAV unit, it works. Getting a heli to return to base would involve a few extra crash parts and some time to tinker I wouldn't say it is impossible to do, but having the downlink arrow is sufficient for me, the current return to base capable heli systems, as we know, are around $10k

If I was to try it I would use the UNAV RTL module, on the tailrotor control, and run tight leveling on the HC Rigid unit, with a heavy forward attitude trim (momentarily applied with the RTL). So clicking into flight mode 3 for example would engage RTL and nose down. This would give a ground speed of about 20 MPH, gradually curving toward base as helicopter movement senses GPS position changes. I suspect real world results may vary, currently do not have an expendible helicopter to try, maybe you can do it Borneo?

But be careful, dont leave outer mark, otherwise you lose everything and you see nothing, better keep in more than good range

Dont know if this been asked before, but are there lcd monitors 7-10" that are powered by batteries?

Im thinking about making a "round the neck solution" with the monitor hanging just below my cheek, but far enough out from my body so i can look down on the Tx if needed, which allows me to theoretically fly by the live view from the camera, i mean so i can at the same time keep an visual and estimated orientation on where the heli actually are if needed

Difficult explanation?

My kangaroo pack uses a shrouded 8" monitor, as you describe. When I wear it it is just below horizon level 15" in front of my face, works well. Just a little PVC and wood. I'll post a pic later.

Yes demands for IF OSD and IF Dragon OSD has been too much for what they can handle. They didn't expect it to go this crazy! Also Hobby Lobby just hooked up with them and now they have to do bigger volume productions by no longer populating the boards themselves, instead having the PCB manufacturer take responsibility of that now.

Anyhow I thought I keep you guys updated on Intelligent Flight's Dragon OSD. Daniel Wee, the developer of Dragon is fine tuning his IMU by rewriting the software. At the present the Artificial Horizon is still a tad behind from real time but he is getting close! He's tweaking the software values as I am typing this now. Here is a small video of his 5th test flight. ( http://www.vimeo.com/996560 )

Disciple, can I suggest you give the whole rig a spray with metallic black paint? The appearance will immediately take on a professional look...

You are right, the entire ground station rig painted a dark grey, etc.? It would look better, and equipment that looks more apart from the homemade or hobby crowd causes customers to pay better, I am convinced of that. Thanks.

I think I'll refrain from greying the heli, but I trust that is not what you meant.
