with the dimensions, i could cut out those side frames with ease on the waterjet. any material and any thickness. it would only take about 10 mins per sideframe. the smaller peices would be even quicker. accurate within .002" - .003"

i was going to do a solidworks assembly for my solid modeling class, for a project we had, but the professor decided to change it to bikes. BIKES!! for crying out loud

Looks nice

Wow

I work as a Applications Engineer at a local reseller of SolidWorks in sweden.
And it's nice to see that someone made an Helicopter in SolidWorks. I would really like to get hold of that helicopter assembly, it would be soo cool to spin around on my laptop.

Good work...

One solidworks reseller posts and several posts are edited away.
I can't think why that would happen

I keep seeing mention of Solidworks, but what about Alibre? It's also a parametric modeling program and costs quite a bit less.

I was looking at it last week because I wanted to do the same thing... model a heli in 3D. In fact, they have contests and it appears the last winner was someone who modeled the rotor head of a RC heli (not sure which one, though).

Anyone heard of Alibre or know if it's worth looking into?

SolidWorks is widespread in design companies. It basically holds the sort of monopoly AutoCAD did in the 90's. Once you learn the fundamentals of parametric CAD, those skills are fairly transferable to other software.

Personally, I've never heard of Alibre.

Solidworks (SW) is a great 3D modeling package and has a loyal following. It has done so establishing itself as a "relatively" low cost full featured package that is very well supported. The company genuinely listens to their users and continually improves the product. It is heralded by many as one of the easiest 3D CAD products to learn. I found it easy to learn but I don't have experience with other products to compare it with. Some say doing things in SW requires many less mouse clicks that in other high-end packages. I've seen SW improve in this regard over the 5 years or so I've been using it.

Alibre came out a few years ago and looks very good for the money. It costs much less than SW and has many of the same features. The company seems to be continually improving the product as well. I've used it a little and it is very similar to SW. For a non-professional designer, you can get Alibre for $500-$1500, which is a good deal considering SW is around $5000-$8000.

I don't know SW at all but I have worked with Catia and Powershape.
I have been thinking of modeling a Sylphide fore a wile now but haven't
had the time to do it.
I'm not to sure but I think the low end cad programs will not be able
to simulate the working parts it wold only be a model to look at and take sizes and so.
