I went to Scarymoor to get in a quick flight or two before heading to the office today only to find that the heli area is now closed. I managed to get in a flight on the main runway, but does anyone know why the heli area was closed? I heard a rumor, but I'll like to know if it's true.

And now that flying at Scarymoor on the weekends, where is everyone flying?

Thanks,

Reyes

That blow's!

Well figure it was only a matter of time. That was really a bad area to fly in. You guys were right in the path of the plankers and to boot near the road.
Reyes you can come over here and fly at my field. Plankers just clear the runway and watch when we fire up.

Tony Green and Terry Overten

Tony Green and Terry Overten had a mid air over the approach.
Tony was doing an auto and terry was doing stall turns over the approach then bang bolth go down.
We that asshole Overten decides its not his fault at all and has it out with Tony. Well those two aditudes exploded.
Terry goes and emails the AMA that helis are flying behind the flight line
and over the approach WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Our pad is so far behind and of to the left of the runway NO ONE
has a problem with it.
So the AMA flys out ( On our dues.) and inspects the field
and says they wont cover the field unless the heli pad is closed.
Well the mindless sheep of MARC bend over and say what ever you want. without a fight or options.
Its bull****! Its been like that for 10 years, not to mention that
how can a new heli pilot come out with traning sticks and hover
now?? We have to go fly dumb dumb plank circles and follow the pattern. None of the plankers are happy about this. As a matter
of fact about 10 of them ran off terry overten last weekend and asked him not to come back.

Too bad...

Too bad for Tony. Hope it wasn't his Extreme.

Sounds like you guys should talk to the club about putting in a hover pad. You have room there by the pilot stations. Then heck fly out over that grass and crap to fly beyond the "plank circle"
There needs to be a heli field over there somewhere. A real offical one with helis first and planks second.
If you guys that live over there started doing some footwork to find a field I know there would be enough of us in the region to make a good club out of it. I would be in for it.
Just going to take a few weekends of searching for a piece of land.
Let me know where the "new" heli field will be.
Worse case we should have a decent field over here in a short while. County is negotiating with the local land barons to buy 1200 acres for a community park. They are very supportive of our club and the guys/plankers in the club are pretty supportive of helicopters. I am hoping when the dust settles and we can start expanding the field I can finagle a big chunk for just helis on the opposite side of the parking lot at the current field.

Dag...*&^%YGJH&^B!! Well that just bites!

Tell me what other fields are available in the area? When I lived in Seattle 1997-2001 I had to travel over the cut drwa bridge, that damn floating highway, and down to scary-moore which was usually a total of 1.1 hours time (round trip), when the traffic is good. When traffic was bad, it could easily take >2 hours. So what do the control-line, rubber-powered kings do? Cut you off with no alternative - Nice. I got kicked out of Magnusen Park just hovering my little electric eco. Every year the soccor nazis try to claim the electric/glider field of Mary Moore South from the NW soaring society and I am willing to bet they one day will. I feel for you guys out there. Good luck on an alternative as there is a real need there. I am glad to hear the AMA has once again kept their cool and made a rational decision-NOT!!! Your's and My dues at work. I guess you could move Ellensburg and fly in 30 mph gusting winds! I wonder if or when the IRCHA will start offering field management/support and flight insurance. If that happens I and the lionshare of us (heli pilots) will send the MA down the porcelein throne!

Ok I feel better now. (and 20 lbs lighter)

Well...

I don't think the AMA was the bad guy in all of this. They were right to some extent in that the heli pad at Marrymoore was in a bad/dangerous spot.
The club is the real villian here by not coming up with an alternative to the present situation.
That is what happens when the powered planks out number the rest of the users.
I think that glider field you are referring to has been gone for a bit now. I could be wrong, but the couple times I have been there I have not seen any gliders and lot's of soccer balls.
The glider guys have a new field owned by King county that is being threatened by developement. They were asking for signatures at the NW model Expo to save that field.
The real problem with Marrymoore park for R/C is that it is not really suited for that use. It is too close to the "burbs" IMO and it will be a constant struggle to keep that field open.

Tony seems to have had a bad streak.

The plankers I spoke with didn't seem happy with Terry or the decision either. Overall, I've been impressed with the general level of support and understanding from the plank community at Marymoor over the last 3 years. Flying from the runway will probably work on most weekdays. At least I can fly to my left when I fly from the runway.

In the end, I think this will just encourage flying at rogue, uncontrolled fields.

Scarymoor to become Marymoor (again)

The board of directors of Scarymoor RC Club did not as Rockcrawler insists do nothing to find alternatives. I am on the board and we spend many hours reaserching any way to counter what the AMA wanted. They basicly told us the insurance for the field would be void if the field configuration was kept as is. So what choice did we have. The AMA gave us a time line and told us that the changes needed to be made for safety reasons and the club charter with the AMA would not be approved until measures were taken to satisfy the insurance requirements. The Board was left with no alternative other than closing the field. The AMA cited that all other fields are this way and indeed all that I have ever seen are this way. With the "new" KC Parks department the Club will be granted a franchise to operate and maintain a RC field at MaryScarymoor. The parks dept wants the club to pay big $$$ to keep the field and with a franchise we can require Marymoor membership as well as programs to solo pilots and better police the field. A lot of pilots are blabbing about the how this and that is wrong and why this and that is stupid etc. but the old days of Scarymoor and its free patch of grass are numbered. The requirement for club membership will provide equity for all pilots. The club has invested a lot of money over the last 23 years and a lot of pilots never became members and never helped to defer the costs for the upkeep to the field. The $25 annual dues have not increased since 1986 and they no doubt have to go up a small amout to allow us to pay the parks dept and do some overdue upgrades to the field now that we have the authority over the field.. All things change, and the downturn in the economy as well as the constant bickering between hobby pilots, it just pushed this eventual outcome to happen sooner than later. I hope Marymoor Park will be the result.

Sorry for venting I feel much better now

I say do just what Flaming Guiser state park did kick out the AMA and self police.
They have a great working example allready accepted by the parks dept to model from.
If they can do it why not us!

Terry,
That is an aweful (sp) BIG liability they are taking if they are not an AMA sanctioned facitlity. Hope those guys are carrying some good insurance because you can bet the Parks department will bail faster than a cat with a smashed tail if somebody get's hurt real bad out there.

Dave,
Thanks for bringing the other side of the debate here. Sounds like a rock and a hard place issue (No pun intended ). Too bad a bad situation had to get this much attention to start the wheels of change moving.
Hope you guys work out a better arrangement and keep things going well. I want to see the fun fly there this summer stay as is.

I would like to see the numbers on what the all those soccor clubs are paying for field use in the Seattle/Redmond. Maybe if we bought more minivans? In this regard, I am willing to bet liabilty insurance coverage for the city is non-existant.

Just because no other field retains a configuration, it doesn't mean the old Scarymoore is anymore dangerous. I just saw it as two different flight lines and it seemed to work. Getting shot down was the bigger threat.

Unfortunately club planners have got their part in a vise when it comes to dealing with the AMA and their mandates.

I understand that the club really had no choice.

As for the AMA, I'm torn. On the one hand, I remember saying to myself "you've got to be kidding" when I saw the heli layout the first time. In time, I got used to the site. It did seem to work. My main concern (other than some folks deciding to walk their dogs out in open field) was the road to the left of the heli area. The biggest issue as I see it is that there is no place for a new person to practice hovering.
I realize it would be hard to enforce, but it would have been nice if the AMA would have allowed the pad to be used for hovering only.

I think club control of the field will be a good thing. I'm guilty of not joining the club, but I'd join to fly. It will help control the airspace to have rules and the authority to enforce them. It would be nice to enforce the "don't fly over the other pilots and pits" rule. :-)

The county is really raising the rates on the soccer fields. I think is just a matter of time until the county decides it can make more money using the flying field for other purposes.

I suppose the club franchise on the field doesn't entitle members to parking passes, does it?

Thanks for the update. I certainly hope we can find a place to fly helis on the weekend. I haven't flown much the last couple of years and loosing weekends isn't going to help.
