Main Discussion > Changing landing gear color??

I'm thinking of changing the color of the landing gear on my CS from white to something else. Instead of paint I'm thinking of dyeing with something like "Ritt Dye " or similar. Would this cause any problems for the gear? I know you are suppose to immerse what you are dyeing in boiling water, how, if at all would this affect the matieral that the gear is made of? -----------BladeRunner.

This was a popular thing to do in the early car racing days before everything went to black plastic or pre-colored choices. I don't know if the plastics used are the same though. Most of that stuff was straight delrin. If you can find a broken one somewhere I say give it a try. I have a Raptor .60 canopy that you got me thinking about.

I used jet black Rite dye for Raptor parts and here is what I found. The tailboom clamps, the rudder guides, the skid plugs, and the tail rotor blades, will take the dye very nicely. The landing gear will come out looking browinsh/yellow. A very putrid color. It seems like the shiney plastics will take dye, the dull plastic ( landing gear struts, Canopy??) will not take the die very well. After I pulled the parts out for from the die I put the landing gear struts back in and left it for several days (no heat) that did not help at all.
Hope that helps

I did my landing gear in a crock pot with yellow rit dye and it came out gorgeous. Same for the tail blades.

dye

yes, RIT DYE is the #1 choice. if you are worried about warpage, it hasnt been much of a problem in the past years, there is an old theory from the days of nylon bicycle rims, when they got out of shape, stick them in the freezer. i never tried it, and i dont know anyone that has, but its supposed to work.?

Color?

Thanks for all the replies, That's what I was concerned about (changing shape) I guess the only way to really know is to just go cook it. Hehehe--------BladeRunner.

crock pot???? PRESSURE COOCKER!!!!!

i dont believe you have to cook the parts, just add boiling water to the dye in an old CLEAN bucket, mix and then soak the parts.

Canopy die?

The raptor canopy will not accept the Rit dye at all. The harder plastic parts like the tail blades, control rod holders all take the dye very well but it just sheets off of the canopy . I think that if you were to lightly sand the canopy that it would make a diffenrence. I had several scratches on my canopy when I did it and the scratched area did take the color well. The rest of the canopy would not. Anyway, good luck and let us know how you make out.

I went to local Dollar store bought a big pot for $5.00. Quality is pretty bad but the only requirements are that it's big enough and it don't leak.
Pretty cheap considering the hassles involed with using on of the wifes good pots.

pressurecooker

well i was just thinking that if you put the parts under pressure AND heat it would force the plastics to take the dye....especially if you get the plastics near the glass transition temp. just make sure they don't deform ....

I've dyed fiberglass shock towers and stuff like that for my rc cars.. Didn't seem to do anything negative to the strength of the fiberglass.. As for heli parts.. dunno?? Worked on my RC-10's though

So BladeRunner... did you cook the landing gears?? how did it turn out?

No, I didn't try it yet. It kinda got put on the back burner for now.........(pun intended. )
I did find some spare gear for experimental purposes though.....I will try it in a couple of wks.....I'll report on my findings.

I just finnished my R-22 and have only 1.5 tanks through it, so I'm working on that. Then I need to reassemble the C-60 and sort it out. After all that I will try the dye job! hehehe....

It's all over.....

You can get Rit Dye at any fabrics store and maybe at most craft stores too. Rit Dye is used for "tye dying" shirts for that 60's look

Enjoy...........
